I need to change my document root in RH 7.2

I almost always change my document root from /var/whatever to /home/net/www , mostly because home has more space and I'm just used to that structure. Anyway, there were several addresses I needed to change, I just searched through the file and replaced anything resembling the old root with the...

The MP really is different than the XP

<< So far there seem to two minor differences. Firstly the mp's are unlocked. Secondly on the mp's the smp 'logic' is tested while on the xp it is not. Otherwise they are the same. Both use the organic packaging. The mp's you speak of are teh earlier ones but the newer ones i described are...

Linux vs. Windows98 performance on low-end system

I used to use nothing but the CLI. So what? I don't get pictures in a web browser. Boo hoo. Screen and virtual consoles make multasking easy (no different than using alt-tab all the time). Heck, I can even watch movies in the CLI with mplayer. However, if you're going to do nothing but web...

Way to resize partitions without Partition Magic??

FIPS can split a FAT32 partition but you have to be careful, it won't check to see if you're cutting off data. Defrag first. resize2fs will move Linux ext2 partitions Also in Linux you can try LVM which is like Dynamic Disks in Win2k I think. The descriptions seem the same anyway.

Linux ftp: wu-ftpd, proftpd, or ???

I use Proftpd© I'd never touch wuftp after that RedHat fiasco© I haven't tried ncftpd but proftpd focuses on security, which is what an ftp server really really needs© If you have trouble with the default config and anon ftp, try adding some of these lines: AnonRequirePassword off...

Why does my Windows 2000 machine reboot randomly?

By default, whenever it's about to BSOD, Win2k will reboot instead© You can change this in System->Performance->SomewhereIForgot So that opens a whole new range of possibilities© Aside from the overclocking, I don't see anything obvious that would cause a crash© You could try turning down...

how the fsck do you get out of emacs in linux?!!??!?

Correction: Use GVIM. Vim with a GUI. Looks like an xterm with a GTK (or Qt, Motif, whatever you tell it to use) toolbar. It helped me get over some of Vim's trickier commands. Anyone know why Emacs has a menu bar in the console when it doesn't recognize GPM?

anyone here using litestep or any other program like it?

How do you patch the GCC file in Linux?

The patch command takes a diff file (obtained using, surprisingly, the diff command) and applies it to an older source code directory. What is the best version of Linux?

Hehe, I remember getting RH 6.1 and not understanding anything for 2 months. I just kept changing the GNOME theme and other trivial things. I think it's nice if you have a goal for Linux. That way you can feel you accomplished something and not end up a month later saying, "Linux sucks...

What does this Red Hat error mean?

GNOME's Control Center crashed. A seg fault means a program is trying to do something it's not supposed to and the kernel is killing it because it's acting screwy. It usually leaves a 4 MB "core" file in your home directory that developers can use to find where the program went...

    Should Israel pull the trigger?

It's beyond the point where religion has any say in it. It's "us" vs. "them". Personally, I think the Palestinians need to grow up. Israel has the biggest, meanest army out there, now that Iraq was defeated. Blowing up school children is not the way to get a country of...

which is more efficient win9x or linux?

They might have been thinking about an MSDN subscription. You get all MS OS's that way. Anyway, a Linux box could beat a Windows box easy because Linux's command line isn't as screwed up as DOS. Therefore, you can cut out the GUI and still have functionality comparable to Windows (hi-res...
