I followed this procedure, after reading about it on the forums and it left me with various gremlins in the system. I don't know why it didn't work for me, but there it is.

Should i buy Athlon X2 or Optron

Definitely go with the C2D. And I haven't owned an Intel since 1998. Got one now; far superior to AMD for what I use it for. Easy OC to 3.2ghz, rock stable.

Windows Vista don't support sound blaster?

So who offers OpenAL sound cards? I'm not talking a fancy top of the line Creative card that needs some software hacks to work, but honest-to-God hardware that works with OpenAl.

I expect so. Are current HD movies marked that way or is "try and see, but you can't return it to the store if it doesn't work"? :)

Okay. I was under the possibly mistaken impression that all High-def media was automatically flagged that way. How would one find out either way, short of buying a movie to see if it requires HDCP or not?

What I mean is that even if the monitor is supported by Vista, that it's possible it doesn't have the required by the MPAA/record industry HDCP input, or that either the video card or sound card aren't HDCP compliant even if the monitor is. It's not Vista's fault per se if the monitor is...

Also note that there is a difference between Vista supporting the monitor and the DRM scheme insisting upon HDCP compliant video, sound, and monitor to play back High Def media...your monitor could be Vista compliant but not MPAA compliant. :(

HOw do i safely dispose of a hard drive?

I just take the drive apart, smash the platters with a hammer into small pieces, and put the hard drive case into a box of recycleable aluminum. You can take the aluminum to a scrap dealer and get money for it. HD cases run about 1/2lb each. Accumulate some other aluminum scrap and get a little...

failing Orthos stress test

I found that setting the FSB to 401, not 400, helped for some reason (different memory strap apparently). Otherwise, I followed n7's suggestions and they did work. 3.2ghz stable for 24+ hours Orthos blend. Good enough for me.

n7, I'm running this mobo without a case, so airflow isn't an issue. I had already reseated the heatsink, using a dab of compound about the recommended size of a grain of rice. No real difference in temps. I'm seriously considering a 100CFM or so fan, since the system sits in the basement...

Minor update. Set the speed to 401x8, upped cpu volts to 1.435v, set memory to DDR802, and it has been running Orthos for 10 hours now, no crash. BUT I'm running the Gromacs test, since it's most similar to the intended use of the system (a Folding at Home dedicated system), and it looks fine...

n7, before I saw your latest suggestions, I tried this: updated BIOS to 0711, 7x401, CPU core 1.387, memvolts 2.1v. Orthos ran okay for an hour on Gromacs, 1.5hrs ok on blend. No crashes. Upped FSB to 415 (DDR 830), memvolts to 2.15v, CPU to 1.4v. Ran memtest 2 hours okay. Orthos crashed...

I retried the OC, all voltages at auto except memory, which I set at 2.1v. 2.6ghz stable for 8 hours Memtest, 6 hours Orthos. Bumped it up to 2.8ghz (350x8), memtest stable for 6 hours, Orthos crashes after 10 minutes. Temp is 47-49C for blend test, 52c for Gromacs test, and 42c idle. Memory...

I had a similar experience: I ran across a similar problem with my Gigabyte 965P-DS3. Never was able to solve it, and RMA'd it. I had memory Corsair said was compatible. NO POST, fans sputtered a couple times, and then stayed on. Black screen, no error beeps. Per the suggestion on the forumn...

One thing I found out the hard way is that the PCI slots are rev 2.3, and most rev 2.2/2.1 cards WILL NOT WORK. You might check to see what rev version your PCI card is. Ah, just checked it. Your card is a rev 2.2...sorry you are probably out of luck with this board.

Accidentally got DS3 965G instead of DS3 965P

Don't feel bad. Newegg sent me a 965G instead of a 965P, and made a fuss about my returning it. They wouldn't cross ship, and initially refused to issue me a call tag so I didn't have to eat the $12 return shipping. Only after I made a real stink about it did they relent and give me a $10 credit...

How important is ram latency for an X2 toledo OC?

Corsair did a white paper on this...It's a PDF. See here: Text My system uses CAS 2.5, so the difference between CAS 2.5 and 2 or 3 isn't much. Check the price difference for CAS 2 and 3 memory and decide for yourself if 2.5% performance difference is worth the cost. I find it usually isn't.
