[SOLVED] NUC, ESXi and 2nd NIC (Thunderbolt)?

That sounds like it would work for what I'm doing. I'd like to passthrough a USB Ethernet adapter to a pfSense VM. From what I understand, the adapter would have to be USB 2.0, since USB 3.0 won't work. But, I'm not sure if that can be done with the external ports on the NUC, since they're all...

[SOLVED] NUC, ESXi and 2nd NIC (Thunderbolt)?

I was looking at doing this exact thing. For your USB Ethernet setup, what did you use? Did you pass it through to a VM?

Planning a ZFS "Mini-SAN", which server do I buy?

I just put together a SuperMicro X10 board for an all-in-one ZFS/ESXi setup, following much of Gea's advice from around the web. I realize your brother is budget constrained, but pay close attention to what is being recommended. Saving money now by getting older hardware will cost you more in...

    Question about dual channel

If you have an SSD, see how the system performs. If it doesn't feel sub-par to you, then you're probably fine. If you don't have an SSD, start with that. An SSD will have a far larger impact on how a system feels over dual-channel memory.

Android VPN Settings - Help on understanding them! Weird problems

My router (ASUS RT-AC68U) supports OpenVPN as well as PPTP. I've not tested it, but it looks pretty painless to set up initially. I'd have to download an app on the Android side, but that's simple enough. Will give that a shot and see how it goes!

Android VPN Settings - Help on understanding them! Weird problems

I'm using a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition tablet, running Android 4.3. Just using the default Android VPN client. I'll have to test the VPN client out on a network that doesn't use the 192.168.1.xxx network range to see if that's the problem. Very strange, I can't see any reason why...

Android VPN Settings - Help on understanding them! Weird problems

Thank you! Setting my "forwarding routes" to 192.168.1.0/24 solved my issues connecting to my home server via SSH. However, setting the forwarding route to 0.0.0.0/0 didn't work, which from what you've described seems like it should have? I don't need to have all my traffic forward through the...

Android VPN Settings - Help on understanding them! Weird problems

I have an ASUS router on which I've enabled the VPN server and it's worked flawlessly when connecting from a Windows box. However, when connecting from my Android tablet, it doesn't work how I expect. The following are "advanced" options I can configure in the VPN account settings, but I...

Help with Basic VLAN Setup - LAB

We already have the L3 switch (Cisco) and the modem/router from the ISP. I have several wifi routers, but they're all residential grade. I don't believe any of the wifi APs have the option for a "guest" access page, but that would be very handy. At the moment, our setup is everything on the...

Help with Basic VLAN Setup - LAB

Thanks for the input. I don't expect more than about 30 users across all VLANs, although the number of devices might grow. Off the main layer 3 switch, it would be only a couple of ports that would be on the Lab VLAN, but there would be downstream switches. gus6464 - For the three VLAN...

Help with Basic VLAN Setup - LAB

I'm looking for input on how best to set up a network here at the office. I have an idea of what I need to do, but don't think I have quite all the details figured out. Here's a picture: What I'd like to have the setup do: Provide basic internet access for guests, but no LAN access...

    MacBook Pro with Windows only?

I think that's one of the biggest selling point for me on a Macbook - baffles me trackpads are so crappy on many Windows machines.

Is there a big hit on battery life if you run Windows 7 on a VM? Or is it just in Bootcamp?

    MacBook Pro with Windows only?

Isn't one option to run Windows in a VM inside of OSX, and the other to run a second boot environment? Any comments on how well each of those function?

    MacBook Pro with Windows only?

That's sounds like a great setup - I didn't realize VMware Fusion functioned like that. I generally prefer a Windows environment as everything I do work related is in Windows. However, the Macbook build quality is really good, and I would like to learn OSX. How about the latest MBP w/ retina...

    Windows machine in MBP13 range?

Any thoughts on how Windows would be on the rMBP? I'm really considering a switch, but I can't completely leave a Windows environment. Haven't used Parallels myself. As best I can tell, nothing on the Windows side competes with rMBP for build quality. Might cost you a bit more, but you do seem...

Sector Level Hard Drive Test/Scan - Any that run from Windows?

Replace "robust" with "has more options/features/tools that just basic error checking for hard drives in a Windows environment" - would be a better description of what I was thinking.

Sector Level Hard Drive Test/Scan - Any that run from Windows?

I was at a minimum looking for a tool that would do a full sector scan of a hard drive to verify a drive functions properly. CHKDSK works for that, but a few extended options is nice to have, especially erase.

Sector Level Hard Drive Test/Scan - Any that run from Windows?

Nope. Not an english major. Does CHKDSK do everything HGST does?

Sector Level Hard Drive Test/Scan - Any that run from Windows?

Also HGST has some useful tools, Erase MBR and Erase Disk. Good to have on hand!

Sector Level Hard Drive Test/Scan - Any that run from Windows?

That looks perfect - a quick or extended test and the ability to read SMART data. CHKDSK would work too, but something a little more robust is good to have on hand. For basic error checking it'd be a perfectly serviceable solution.

Sector Level Hard Drive Test/Scan - Any that run from Windows?

I'm looking to scan a separate drive from my OS, just as a way to check out drives that would be installed in other systems. I've used SeaTools as the main scanner in the past, but hate to bring down an entire machine just to scan a hard drive for defects.

Sector Level Hard Drive Test/Scan - Any that run from Windows?

I have a hot swap SATA drive sled and would like to error check a drive without having to boot into a DOS environment. Are there any tools that can run from Win7 x64 to do this? Being able to check USB drives would also be a plus.

LGA 1150 Haswell Motherboard with proper VT-d support

This thread has been really informative! I've just recently gotten myself up to speed on VT-x and VT-d. Looking to build an ESXi box that support VT-d so I can pass through a SAS HBA for a ZFS setup (which will then be used as the VMware datastore). Definitely going to keep my eye on that...

is it possible to replicate a host file between computers?

Putting Together NAS with FreeNAS... RAID5

After building a couple file servers for home use, my advice is to build properly from the start. You'll spend more money getting better parts/more drives/etc, but after all is said and done you can just let it run 24/7 and not think about it. Currently I'm running ZFS on Solaris (see link in...

Build Log: 12TB ZFS File Server (6x2TB)

And if you're doing strictly Solaris ZFS, pay special attention to hardware. Solaris is pretty picky about chipsets and whatnot. I went with Intel to avoid headaches. However, look into running ZFS Ubuntu/Linux. It's made progress since I built my file server, and I'll be transitioning over...

the best damn wifi router money can buy!

Been very happy with my 66U for several months now. Spits out a signal from the basement up two floors where I can get ~20MB/s with a 450Mbps PCI-e network card (5Ghz N). Let's me stream 1080p movies no problem. Running the latest ASUS firmware with no issues.

Your first ever computer + an embarrassing story

Oh man, I remember setting up a bootable floppy disk that had a menu of various games that you could pick from. Do onboard SATA controllers operate at "lowest connected speed?"

I believe it was only an issue with IDE devices because they were connected on the same cable. Since SATA devices have their own connection, I would assume each device would operate at the highest possible speed and not be affected by other devices.

    Red or Green?

Personally I'd get the Green drives. Cost difference is quite a bit, and I doubt you'd notice any practical difference between the two performance wise. Your speed bottleneck might be the NAS itself versus the drives.

    DIY NAS cases?

The case I used for my NAS doesn't support hot swap bays, but hopefully I won't need to do much drive swapping. If I modded the case a little bit it could hold 8x3.5" drives, then another 4x2.5" drives in the 5.25" bay. I'd have to add in an 8-port controller card, but that would be it. Best...

    Are chained SATA connectors safe?

Your power supply is most likely fine, and had nothing to do with the hard drive failing. Hard drives just do that. You can see my file server build log (link in sig) - I'm running 6 hard drives off a single cable. Uptime of over a year now running pretty much 24/7 on a 450W PSU.

I personally use Clonezilla to copy drives, then GParted to expand the partition. Lots of other tools do the same thing as mentioned. Should be easy to upgrade your SSD.
