hey does anyone know if this burner/case combo would work with a mac powerbook? i don't see why not, but their site claims compatibility with windows and doesn't say anything about mac...
For folks who live in the bay area, a good alternative is the Alameda County Computer Resource Center (http://www.accrc.org/). They charge a small fee for recycling, but a lot of the hardware that they receive gets rebuilt/repaired and then shipped off as actual working machines to people who...
i think it's kind of a toss up as well. i built the machine i'm using about 3 yrs ago (yikes) after a ridiculous amount of research and for the most part it's served me well, but there are a few small nagging issues that i've never quite been able to resolve. it's built from parts that were all...
i'm thinking about getting one (PHR-100AC) for a 200GB Seagate 7200.7 -- anyone have any experiences (good or bad) with these? the two issues that i'm potentially concerned with are
1) no fan (which is great for noise but will this thing dissipate enough heat through its aluminum body?) and...
FWIW, i emailed mwave about this and they replied:
Thank you very much for your interest in our company . That hard drive only
has a 1 year warranty . Please let us know if you have any further
questions.
wondering if there are any new opinions about this -- i'm also in the market for a good 120-160GB external firewire/USB2 HDD in the $120-$160 range. thoughts?
anyone know what's inside that simpletech 120GB drive?
anyone know if these two mice are the same save for the blueness of one and the err, non-blueness of the other? trying to figure out if there's a reason for the price difference...

stoerm,
thanks for the tip -- i read about that card and the BB deal yesterday too -- i wonder if it'd be enough? even more importantly, i wonder if i can realistically get up that early to get in line at a STORE (!).
i'm trying to constrain the scope of the upgrade path. :) i mean, the vast majority of folks who will buy KOTOR (or any game, for that matter) won't have machines that are anywhere near the cutting edge, right?
if i could get away with spending $100 or less on a better graphics card i think...
hi folks
i'm not really much of a gamer, but star wars: knights of the new republic has me intrigued. unfortunately, i think my homebuilt system from two years ago is probably not up to the task -- here's what i've got:
iWill KK266 MB (onboard sound)
AMD Thunderbird 1.1GHz
640MB 133MHz SDR RAM...
Hi there,
I have a machine that sometimes takes a really long time to play the .wav files that have been assigned to system events. For instance, the "bing!" tones associated with a new IM or a dialog box opening sometimes take as long as five seconds to play. During the wait time, the entire...
i haven't tried out that guitar, but my gut feeling is that unless you're only willing to spend $230, you can do much much better. the guitar itself might be ok, but i bet that amp sucks big time.
for an alternative, the new squier guitars (made by fender) are inexpensive and surprisingly nice...
glad i could help. :)
so far so good with my set-up. i had some major difficulties with figuring out where to plug the power header switch in (blushes in embarrassment) thanks to the crappy manual, but it seems to be working now. fingers crossed!
hey i've been promoted to "member"! woo hoo! :D
the rig i'm building will use an ECS K7S5A board and an XP 1800+ -- i decided to go with your advice and order the 8500LE -- i bought from newegg and chose the one listed at $94 -- is that the right one? please say yes. :)
thanks for the info anandaustin -- upon closer inspection it looks like the 3 versions they have at newegg are
Radeon 7500 SDR $57.00
Radeon 7500LE DDR $59.00
Radeon 7500 DDR $65.00
looks like the 8500LE goes for about $94. Does the 8500LE really have better *2D* performance than the 7500? i...
At newegg.com they have no fewer than three cards marked as Radeon 7500 (ok, one of them is labelled 7500LE). Could someone explain the differences between the cards? Information on the website is scarce to say the least.
TIA!
thanks spanky. the things i'm concerned about with the ECS mobo are: 1) only two slots for RAM (well, ok, 4, but you can only use 2 at a time), and 2) reports of finicky-ness w.r.t. to power supply. thoughts?
so how does this configuration look to you guys? prices are from newegg (i think ordering RAM from crucial will save me a few bucks). is there a better choice for the CPU (i.e., a sweeter spot than the 1.2 duron? should i go athlon XP?)? how 'bout the mobo choice? would you go shuttle or save $4...
i have a KK266 and i use its onboard sound in addition to a GadgetLabs 4x4 DAW card. maybe the c-media suffers slightly compared to the GL card but i use it to monitor output and i think overall it sounds pretty good. you may as well try it for yourself and see if you can tell the difference...
ok, $350-$400 then...$250 was sort of an arbitrary "cheap" dollar amount. the local mom and pop shop down the street sells whole systems out the door for $300, so i figured a little less than that was a good amount to aim for. ok, now what? :^)
hi there,
any help would be most welcome. i've been put in charge of upgrading an old family PC. i have around $250 to spend -- maybe a little more if there's really a good justification for it. here's what it looks like now:
Gigabyte 686-LX3 (440LX) mobo
Pentium II 266 MHz
196 MB PC66 RAM...
