IPsec vs. SSL

Couldn't one use IPsec to replace SSL on a web/pop3 server? My thinking is, that instead of having to buy SSL certificates, you could just setup the server to require IPsec on particular ports, or all ports if you really needed - all for "free". Any downsides to using IPSec over SSL?

win2k pro does do ipsec, in both directions (responsd, and request). you can tell win2k pro to accept incoming connections, via pptp, so it could be VPN server that way. but pptp isn't that secure.

Question about Compaq 2800T laptop...

i have a compaq 2805 (p4 1.4 mobile), 512 megs of ram, and the 14.1 xga display. i easily get 3 hours out of the battery. now if you order the computer direct from compaq, which you should - then specify the larger battery as the one you want, 66whr. i'm pretty sure i have the smaller one...

WINS Servers and DHCP Servers question

as long as the router's DHCP service let's you specify an WINS server that is to be issued to the requesting DHCP clients, then yes WINS will still work. otherwise you'll need to manually input the WINS server on the client machine.

Ability to reach hosts on a network even if an NT server goes down?

if the hosts have a valid DHCP lease, and the server goes down - they will still have an IP address. DHCP attempts to renew half way through the lease - and if the dhcp server can't be found, the DHCP client should still keep it's address (i could be wrong on this). all windows machines...

raid ata 100 a joke

in order to take advantage of ata 100 raid, you really need to have a 64 bit pci bus, and controller. look at controllers by 3ware, and read reviews of them to get a better understanding of how the pci bus is limiting performance.

if your friend is going to use DV, then just build a nice system with some firewire ports. also, lot's of ram, at least 512, and storage space, say 2 separate drives (20gb+ 7200rpm for OS, and 60+ gb for video/scratch disk).
