Unfortunately it was already set that way. Creating another one just like that and attempting to boot from it didn't work. I have both those files there, is it possible that hal.dll actually is corrupted, im which case I would need to copy a new copy of it from the WinXP CD on that drive?
Okay, here's what it looks like after I confirm I want to use fixboot:

Plextors are hard to beat, but I personally have had a great experience with my Lite-On 24x burner. They seem pretty reliable to me, and I haven't had a coaster yet unless I've been deliberately doing it (stupid stupid stupid) or have been running a bunch of other RAM sapping apps in the background.
