  1. Macbook Pro extension base

I think the concept is fine. Additional storage and ports is great but, imo, I'd definitely expect supplemental battery life as well if I'm adding significant thickness to a laptop. Without that, I probably wouldn't buy it. edit: Jesus Christ. At possibly ~$1400 I wouldn't remotely consider it...
  2. YouTube "star" kicked off Delta flight for speaking Arabic

Cried wolf. If people actually were complaining about something as simple as him speaking arabic to his mom, that's unfortunate. Problem is I have a hard believing that this isn't just another stunt. Or that if it wasn't, that he wasn't the one who escalated and continued the argument himself...
  3. iPhone 6s (and others) #draingate .........

Started for me after ios10 was released. One thing I've noticed is that opening a camera using app is a crapshoot once battery is below ~50%. Makes me wonder if there's some sort of instability in the battery itself when, for whatever reason, some extra juice is needed. I dunno. iOS10/software...
  4. iPhone 6s (and others) #draingate .........

Didn't even know about this until the other day. Apparently our 6s's fall within the number range to be serviced. Hopefully it fixes the issue because it's definitely annoying.
  5. Affinity Photo - Photo editor.

I like it and I think for the price it's a no-brainer. Yeah, it doesn't replace Lightroom, but complements it well enough. Beats Gimp and Pixelmator (imo).
  6. What was the event that led to the most physical pain you've ever felt?

I've always heard this, but I want to know who made that statement and by what basis. I've had kidney stones (not big ones) and they were certainly the greatest pain I've ever experienced. But I'm not convinced that they easily compare to cluster headaches, a broken spine or significant third...
  7. States voting for marijuana out of luck?

While it's possible, is there real indication that the GOP actually would go after states legalizing MJ? Enforcement will be hard without cooperation from local PD. Prosecution will be difficult also. Well before legalization, many municipalities in CO gave up on trying to prosecute weed cases...
  8. ATOT - Recommend me a good shoe (sneaker)

Or ~$30 from Ross/Marshalls/TJMaxx. I just bought a pair the other day. Basically like indoor soccer shoes (Adidas Samba), but cheaper and more fashionable. Probably not enough support and too stiff a sole for OP, but I'm liking them so far.
  9. What kind of cable do you use to connect your video card to your monitor?

DVI at home to a shitty HP TN panel monitor. DVI at work to 2x U2412M All 1920x1200
  10. What pets do you have and what do they look like?

Four cats and a dog. Luna, White German Shepherd Dog with energy that never ends Muffin. 22 years old long hair tabby Ginger - maniac Bengal Fatty - Most lovable (to us) black cat in history Milo - The gray male
  11. doomsday preppers: what's the best online source for emergency bulk food

72 hours is nothing. You can survive on Ramen and M&Ms in that small amount of time. A true apocalypse? Yeah, I guess get a couple of those Costco pallets mentioned. Rationed in half you should be able to make one pallet last about 6 years...assuming you have the water and fuel necessary to cook...
  12. iOS 10

Battery drain has been pretty bad for my 6S, particularly with the google photos app all of a sudden indicating 50+% drain, all background usage. Uninstalled that for now. Also a few random crashes or something, then getting the battery's drained indicator when I try to turn it on. Plug it in...
  13. Search photos for text

As far as I can tell, google drive (not photos) employs OCR on images. I tested by downloading some random images of whiteboards with words written on them, then searched those words. Results worked if the words were clearly, legibly written (printed) and image resolution was good. Crappy...
  14. Retirement gift for an avid hobbyist photographer

Assuming the retirement hasn't come and gone, and he's into hiking, a Peak Design Capture Clip is a useful tool in that price range.
  15. Perseids 2016

Rad stuff. I aimed a little low because wanted my friend and I in the pictures for a timelapse. Missed a lot of the meteors we saw which were higher in the sky. Nonetheless, I need to go through and make a composite from my images. Here's a 5 second timelapse. I wish I could have shot more but I...
  16. recommend me a new (to me) DSLR (new / used) for under $2000

For my purposes when hiking/backpacking, I find weather sealing to be important (because I like keeping my camera out and accessible, even in rain). In that regard, Pentax weathersealing is phenomenal, sealed lens selection is adequate for OP's requested needs and the sensor is top notch...
  17. American Horror Story Season 6 (starts 9/14)

LOL, my wife is going to shit a brick when she sees that poster. I enjoy this show. Last season was probably the slowest and weakest for me, but I was still entertained well enough.
  18. Officially undecided for POTUS

Oh you're right. For some reason I thought Florida's electoral votes were split by district.
  19. Officially undecided for POTUS

You're right. Nader votes didn't matter. If all Nader votes went Gore, it would have only mattered in Madison County; and only adding 54 votes, winning by 31. Bush still wins the rest of the counties he won, over Gore+Nader votes combined.
  20. What Photo & Video Management Software do you use?

Also use Lightroom. I used to use Windows Photo Gallery back in the day, and it worked pretty well, but it doesn't look like they've updated it in a couple years.
  21. Anybody else think the newest Star Trek movie was meh?

Yeah, it was predictable in many parts, but it's a fun movie. I enjoyed it. I dunno, I think people are somewhat harsh on these movies because they're looking at the old movies and series with very rose colored glasses.
  22. Skydiver to jump 25,000 feet into a net without a parachute!!

    The jump: https://streamable.com/h6bd
  23. Google TrailView

I don't. Almost certainly the major trails for the major National Parks will get the treatment. I'd expect the entire Appalachian Trail probably as well. Probably some of the Colorado Trail and 4 pass loop at least. As far as Michigan goes, I'd guess the larger attractions like Sleeping Bear...
  24. Virtual printer that saves the .pdf in a server

So a pdf print server? I haven't used any but they certainly exist. Seen this one recommended somewhere on reddit: http://www.pdfforge.org/pdfcreator-server
  25. Taking pictures of Lightning.

We had a very active thunderhead East of where I live a last week. This is one of the better shots. Also managed this quick timelapse. Something bumped my camera halfway through and altered the zoom/focus though. https://gfycat.com/SilverPlainDogwoodclubgall
  26. Seven die in failed selfie attempt

It doesn't. Consider it lost in translation. Basically, they lost their footing and were swept away. The article does make it clear that the water level and currents were high, you can infer the rest from that.
  27. candles / lighters to boil water in a beer can?

LOL, candles would take fucking ages. Look into Esbit, or DIY fancy feast alcohol stoves if you're trying to go ultralight. If you're somewhere with fire restrictions, you'll probably need to stick to isobutane and a stove with a valve.
  28. Two Step Verification Will Fail Hard.

Same. Between Lastpass, Authy (or SMS), and printed backup codes if I absolutely needed them, implementing two-step has been a non-issue for me.
  29. Best Buy should just close...

Yeah, it's really variable. The two closest BB's to me couldn't be more different. One seems like it perpetually in a state of "going out of business", while the other is well kept, well stocked and well visited.
  30. HBO's Game of Thrones season 6 discussion thread- airing 4/24/16 (No book spoilers)

Justice! Awesome episode. About a dozen times I assumed Jon Snow was going to bite the dust. The two cavalries colliding into combat was ridiculous.
  31. What's the most number of hours you've worked in a week

90-100 hours or so when we were scrambling to get the last habitats setup and populated with animals to get a large aquarium renovation finished before the opening deadline. I basically slept at work that whole week. The OT was pretty bitchin' though.
  32. Man sued for $30K over $40 printer he sold on Craigslist

Some people just deserve to be hit by a bus.
  33. Looking for inexpensive but quality jeans

One stop shop for juggalo attire?
  34. Looking for inexpensive but quality jeans

You're thinking of the shirts that are longer than normal. The jeans have the gusseted crotch so you can bend over in the first place.
  35. Looking for inexpensive but quality jeans

Bought some Levis Denizen jeans from Target over the Winter. They're nice. Affordable, and so far they seem reasonably durable. I like the semi-stretchiness in certain areas. Makes them super comfy. I dunno how many loops they have off hand though. I think Duluth Trading Co jeans have 7 loops...
  36. Wolves change rivers

Well, the surviving deer should be happier as predation should help curb the spread of chronic wasting disease.
  37. Dogs Left In Hot Cars

It's a perfect example of why I'm not entirely convinced about these particular good samaritan laws, freeing "reasonable" people with "good faith" of liability. Outside of ludicrously obvious cases, too many people are terrible judges of dog behavior or comfort. "Oh it's panting, it must be...
  38. Dogs Left In Hot Cars

"Puffing". Been illegal in Colorado for a while. Stupid law, imo.
