To go athlon 64 or not...

Yes, go for A64. I used to have XP 2400+ and upgraded to A64 3000 o/ced at 2.5ghz. It's much faster. I never look back. Edit: get a used MSI NEO2 from for sale. You can get it less than $100.

Linksys WRT54G with modded firmware You need a good adapter as well. I have a cisco G pci adapter which cost more than a wrt54g. However it has 100 mw at default.

I ordered a 3500+ 90nm and it came severely damaged

Their packaging is not good. When I received 3 hard drives from them, all of them was packaged with a protective form box but they didn't seal it(besides the form was a bit big for a drive) so the hard drives were out of it.
