whats the advantage of PCI-express over AGP?

It still wouldn't be ideal. Any high performance game (ie. FPS) would still want to stay within the bounds of the onboard video RAM because while PCI-Express is fast, it's still a turtle compared to video RAM. I could see it have some use with MMORPGs, since textures are generally more compact...

Buying a new 6800/X800 means it will become useless in a year or two?

http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.html?i=1656 July 18, 2002; the Radeon 9700 Pro was paper launched (I forget when it actually showed up in stores, but it was at least 30 days after release). So no, not more than two years. Less than.

Thoughts on the Lian Li PC-V2000

I wouldn't say it's smart. Anyone with a bit of knowledge in thermal dynamics could completely redesign a motherboard layout to fit a better cooling solution. The really inguinuitive solutions are the ones that make better cooling setups with the current aging and static ATX form factor.

Solutions for keeping computer room clean so dust doesnt get all over my stuff?

You could always, you know... keep your house, especially that room, clean. And don't use some stupid feather duster.

Submerging your mainboard in dihydrogen oxide

A lot of people do that actually, even those who don't use any sort of condensers and such. It helps prevent anything from growing and also adds a little color (with the right lighting, looks pretty spiffy). I think most HardOCP'ers that are really into watercooling use a 1:1 mix.

    Fans, fans, fans

I'm going to side with everyone else too. The Vantec Stealth is not as quiet as the Panaflo in person. http://gizzo.8m.com/fans/index.html There's a list of 80mm fans and their manufacturer's reported specs. Generally if the CFM-to-noise ratio seems unbelievable, then you'd best take it with...

    Fan RPMs

You mean overvolt your fans? It'll wear out the fans faster, generally will create disproportionally more noise, and possibly burn out a motherboard header (if you used that instead of a direct molex connection), but it's possible. Basically it'd take some rewiring to the point where you'd...

are floppy drives starting to be phased out?

Yes, you can. WinXP and Win2k have drivers for many popular SCSI cards, like Adaptec or pretty much anything with an LSI chip on it. On my most recent machine, I installed WinXP with the dual channel LSI u160 card without a floppy drive. It's still an area that's greatly lacking though (I'm...

    AMD "sells out" of 2800+.....HUH????????

Well, AMD can't just up and get better marketting. The reason why Intel has such great marketting is because they have a great deal more cash to spend on it than AMD. Comparing them to BitBoys is a bit harsh. Those guys haven't even reached A0 silicon with any product... ever.

what tool does everyone use to push the dam retention clip down?

Motherboards have a protective layer over the traces which make it much more resistant to slight nicking and shorting, usually hitting it with the screwdriver while installing the heatsink isn't too much of a problem (unless you REALLY smack that sucker), so don't pee your pants over it. But...

Help me understand the "Mac arctitecture"

That's not very true at all. Here's a popular example, it's a little old, but it's somewhat relevant: http://www.digitalvideoediting.com/2002/05_may/features/cw_aeshowdown.htm Basically it shows a dual Athlon MP (1.533GHz/1800+) against a dual 1Ghz G4+ system. The Athlon system is clocked 50%...

    Dell Form Factors

There's also a problem of the various case LED's/switches/speaker. Rumors are Logitech is also coming out with a 5.1 system very soon to follow up the Z560's, the Z580's. I predict that they'll be $300 suggested retail price, most likely about $224 online if the Z560's retail-street price delta (suggested retail price of $200, actual US website prices are...

Comments on this case(Lian-Li PC60USB)...aluminum case commentary?

I'd like to see a $30 steel/plastic case (~$130 - "$100 difference") that's as easy to work with or as well built as a Li-Li and doesn't look like ass (not that the Li-Li's are Picasso's or anything, but they do look pretty good). And yes, the Li-Li does have cooling benefits, not from...

    Seriously,Klipsch or Logitech??

I've noticed that the vast majority of those people seem to think the Z560's are cheap alternatives for a home theater/stereo setup instead of computer speakers just because it has massive bass. But yes, they certainly do seem to have more than their fair share of failures. I'd have to say...

www.storagereview.com It seems that desktop performance sees the best increase in performance between the BB and JB, looks to be around 15% or so. I don't think 1GB of RAM is overkill, with or without RAMDrive. I've easily exceeded my 768MB quite often when working with large images or a...

Why don't people manufactur Dell and Gateway Type Cases for Us?

"Screwless" cases generally aren't too sought after because something screwed in is much more stable and less prone to vibration problems than screwless setups. Dell and Gateway cases also have a problem of heat. Yes, they have good air channeling and their machines run cool enough to not burn...

    heatsink and fan recommendation

The two most popular choices for low-noise heatsinks with 80mm fans are the Alpha PAL8045 and the Thermalright AX-7. I'd have to say the 8045 is slightly better than the AX-7 with cooling, but it's also slightly more expensive. The difference in temperature and price is negligible though...

    My New MEGA Rig :)

What Aluminum Case are ya using?

Actually, Li-Li's have been improving from the first run models. The PC-60's first made are not the same as the ones made now. One of the most noteable improvements is the new buttons on the new face plate, which are no longer that cheesy dark grey plastic square deal of the past (they're...

    How loud is 33 dBa?

I disagree with HowStuffWorks on conversation dB. 60dB is mighty loud. Perceived sound is on a log(10) scale, meaning a 10dB increase is perceived as twice as loud as before. If you really, really want to know how one sound will add up with another, you have to convert the dB rating into...

for those of u with silver aluminum cases..

It doesn't look weird. It looks like ass. Most people (who care) find ways around it. There's basically three ways: 1) Make the beige into the right color, either by painting or buying/making new faceplates (you can buy stick-on covers for certain drive models to match Li-Li's). 2) Buy...

    Types of ram

It's not a PR rating of sorts. It's the amount of bandwidth. 2100 = 2.1GB/sec, 2700 = 2.7GB/sec, etc. Unless you mean it's a PR thing because it uses a bigger number, but then so is PC266/300 etc (because it's not really 300MHz, it's 150MHz double data rate). If it was purely a non-PR rating...

Success story on quieting a PC - here's what I did

The Panaflo L1A doesn't have any "augmented" designs. It's just a normal fan with lower power (lower RPM). In fact, it's pretty subpar (that's why it's so cheap). Look at the CFM to dB ratio, it's pretty sad. You can get fans that are both more quiet and pump out more air (or equal the dB...

High Res DOOM III shots!!! EDIT: AND NEW VIDEO??

Such isn't the case with iD. The vast majority of their profit lies not within their own game sales, but with engine licensing. They don't have to sell very many copies of Doom III. As long as it's recognized as having the best engine around, they'll rake in cash. Not that I think a GF4...

    Panaflo Case Fans

A 10dB decrease is 1/2 preceived sound. You might be thinking of amplitude. 3dB increase/decrease is twice/half amplitude. I'd have to agree though, there's a gigantic difference between 32dB and 21dB. Also, higher RPM fans produce higher pitch sound which adds salt to the wound.
  32. N

    This is one NICE machine!

Well, Mac users are also in denial about the G4e's aging architecture and subpar memory subsystem and inflated price and BS marketing and Steve Job's poor business decisions... etc., so I tend to take the mac opinion with a grain of salt.

    DVD: is 16x worth it?

Make sure you have the correct drivers. There was a period when some manufacturers limited certain models' ripping speed purposely. I'm afraid I don't have a list of models and driver versions though. If I remember correctly, the Pioneer 115 (or maybe it was 105?) was the most infamous at...

Fast Quiet Seagate HD increasingly sluggish ? Help!

If your hard drive was fast when you first got it and now it's slow, I'd be worried. What is the ABSOLUTE QUIETEST HSF?

The article exagerated beyond belief. First off, from his graph, he compares the $30 heatsinks to the SK6 (predecessor to the SLK-600, but I believe the only difference between the two are the fan clip mechanisms), which, as you pointed out, is no where near $80. In fact, the original SK6...

Vantec Stealth fans are definitely louder than the PC Power & Cooling Silencer fans

The PCP&C Silencer fans are fairly well known for not pumping out the spec'd CFM at its RPM. There's only so much more efficient fin design can do, it's more a matter of calculus and physics than engineering ingenuity, so that significantly lower RPM gives it away. Compare it to the Papst...

What is the ABSOLUTE QUIETEST HSF?

From the second link in the previous post: This review is insane. $80? More like $30 without a fan ($28 at newegg.com). A Panaflo (the 21dB one, L1A I think) is what? Four bucks? The AX-7 is designed for low RPM fans, yet its design also allows it not to be a slouch with high RPM fans...

    Modding your Monitor...WTF?

Well you have over 2000 posts on one forum. Some might argue that YOU have too much time on your hands. At the end of the article, it said he only spent two hours on it. How long did it take you to post over 2000 times? Modding, like most hobbies, is far from purely utilitarian (although...

Urgent!!! I almost killed my AthlonXP 1800+!!!! :|

First off, the incredible heat of the heatsink came from the processor, so tearing it off wouldn't really do much. If the CPU's burnt, it's burnt. Both the processor and CPU will constantly cool off if there's no power supplied to the CPU, so if the CPU isn't burned out while it's still...

1.4 ghz AMD...how long will she last me?

It really depends on what you're doing. If you play mostly flight simulators, then your CPU is already your bottleneck (you wouldn't even break 25 FPS in Jane's F/A-18). If you play FPS, when UT2k3 and DoomIII come out, you'll start to feel its age (but should be somewhat okay until second...
