Tips for custom ATX case modifications - drilling through metal.

Thermal Compounds. What's the difference?

A non silicone based product would be preferred. I use a product from Tech Spray, 1978-DP, that works very well. It will not dry up or harden and has a operating temp of -40c to 200c Tom

Voice Activated Computer Setup

I use Dragon Nat Speak and it works very well. It should work good for your needs. You can control just about any menue with it. I would recomed a box with at least 256 RAM and around 700 Mhz +. Did I mention it likes a lot of RAM? Tom

Is there anyone know what is this resistor for on the Pro2-A??

The C106 denotes that it is a capacitor. 106 is not a value, it is a location. The only way to find out the value of the cap is to test it. Do you have the old one? Tom

From the looks of it in that pic, I think that it is a a cap, not a resistor. Is it brown / tan in color? They, cap or resistor, can be replaced if the correct value is known. Unfortunatly, caps are not marked with their value. Do you have the old one? Tom

Is this modem a hardware or winmodem?

Looks like a Win modem. From the stated Minimum requirements in the manual, ie, 166 Mhz and Win 95, 98, and NT. A hardware modem would be compatable with DOS, Win 3.1, Linux and would not have such a Mhz requirement. Tom

Problem with Duon system

You may have toasted a onboard voltage reg when doing the hot pluging of the fan. It sounds as if you cpu is freezing from heat. Try setting voltage in BIOS lower. If you can get it booted, check the health monitoring software to see what voltage is being reported. Tom

As was mentioned, that is a slot A classic, not a bird. A slot A T-Bird model # would start with a "A" not a "K", such as "A7700" not "K7700" micron, SKY2KLAU ... there are OEM slot A T-Birds. They can be found in speed grades from 650 - 1000 Tom

Why are AMD chips/mobos so sensitive to power supplies?

As was mentioned, not all power supplys are created equal. Some 250's will work where some 300's will not. Along with needing enough power on the 3.3v and 5v leg to run the chip, it is also very important that the timing of the two voltage legs are correct. Don't have the spec sheet handy, but...

Unless you need cdrom support in DOS, then you can REM the lines for the driver out in the config.sys and autoexe.bat Windows does not need them. Tom

How fast of a tbird can I run on my K7V?

750 - 800 is about as fast a Bird will run on the K7V. However, there is a mod for the K7V to turn it into a K7V-T. All Asus did to make the T was add some caps and resistors to the V. Tom
