I need a Norton Ghost - like utility, help!

PowerQuest DriveImage 5 can backup an NTFS parititon to another NTFS drive/parition just fine, it can compress images with two levels of compression, and it can also encrypt them. i think that covers all the features you asked for. not sure about it working over FireWire though.

just a few thoughts...

i always considered this place to have some of the smartest and most well behaved people in any forums i visit from time to time. but i cant help but notice that the amount of hateful, violent, ignorant, arrogant, racist and cheap comments on AT forums lately is just way too high compared to AT...

Best Freeware/Shareware sfv checker?

XP UPDATES FINALLY AT WINDOWSUPDATE.COM

i saw the news earlier on neowin.net quite a load of updates like you said, it found new drivers for my modem, sound card, P3, and even Geforce2Go the compatibilities update lists some very popular and important apps as well, so i would recommend getting it, among them is nero 5.5, anti virus...

dying laptop. anyway to fix it?

it sure seems to me like a wiring/short or hopefully not, a bad motherboard. :( as for the life span, i never owned a compaq laptop, but my old Dell Inspiron 3200 was left on for weeks not days sometimes and its almost 3 and ahalf years old and still works just fine.

Req: Software to Shut off Computer after Downloading

well for normal downloading, any decent download manager should do the job, i use flashget, as for downloading from IRC, if you use mIRC then you can write a simple script to auto d/c and shutdown your system after its done downloading from DCC, for newsgroups, again depends on what you use, if...

Ok, this is a weird one

- is he running a firwall of some kind? behind a router or something? - check the LMHOSTS file, maybe some program messed it up - in tcp/ip settings, if he is on dial-up he probably doesnt need WINS resolution, it may have become enabled somehow, disable it

PNY CD-R media any good?

hmm, i got a pack of 50 Black Diamon PNY 80min media not too long ago, so far didnt have problems with them, they burn and play fine, but we will see as they age a bit.
