Re-Use the old CPUs/systems, or get rid of them?

Just wondering if anyone reuses old CPU/systems. I still have a complete set of Pentium II 223 and its board and parts, as well as a complete set of Athlon XP-M "Barton" with its Socket A board. I have lots of fond memory using them: all those nights of college papers on the Pentium II, and the...

    Vertex 3 Review

it does look like that 25nm NAND is actually physically less capable compared to 34nm. This is a shame as normally the die shrink meant more efficiency, but here it's the reverse.

Are the OCZ Vertex 2's failure prone?

I sure hope OCZ recovers from this, or maybe this is a problem across all SandForce based drives. I think reliability is the one major thing that's been overlooked by everyone looking to SSD saturating the I/O performance. I mean how often do you hear about HDD failing after 1 or 3 months? It...

Benches comparing very old to newer cards

They're both low level cards, but the 4350 is a perfect cheap HTPC card, low power, and good enough for 1080p.

My original P133 purchase receipt from 1996!

Mine was Pentium II 223, I think bought bought back 1997. Those were the days. The DOS memory problem was a PITA to deal with when trying to load games, had to keep adjusting Himem.sys and getting rid of TSRs. They sure have come a long way.

Ongoing issues with my SSD (Samsung 470)

Yeah, it sounds like Bootmgr that's having corruption, which could happen to HDD as well. It's more likely of a problem within Windows OS. But this would make me feel iffy about using this particular SSD.

Is 25nm NAND that much worse than 34nm NAND? They better half the SSD price!

I'm almost ready to get an SSD, and was looking forward to some nice performing SSD using the new 25nm NAND, but now I'm reading that 25nm is less capable than 34nm ones. But why isn't the price reflecting this? Things have remained largely for past 4 months or so. For one thing, switching to...

    How future-proof is a quad-core?

For dedicated machines, for gaming or video rendering, you're going to be able to do 8core or even 16, but 4 is a pretty sweet spot and plenty for normal use. But Quad core obsolete? No way! Not even single core is obsolete, the reason is that the concept of computing is changing...

swapping out 5870 vanilla for 5770 vanilla

Stock fan on my Phenom X4 955 CPU is too loud, suggestions?

By the way, if you quiet the CPU fan down, your wife will probably complain about your case fan next. So be thinking about which case you want. :P .. after that...do something about the power supply fan too! :D

Stock fan on my Phenom X4 955 CPU is too loud, suggestions?

I say go with Hyper 212. I have the HyperTX2, it works great on my AthlonII X4. Also I have water cooling on my Penryn, it's working great if you keep it maintained.

    Corsair Blog: 25nm SSD Transition

they made better memory than OCZ too! But does 25nm NAND chip mean less write resistance? I thought it wont' have as many write cycles.

Overclocking Stability Over Time? i5 750

Could it be memory? best to run Memtest to isolate the faults to either memory or CPU (or the board connection to either). If your chip is getting same temp, I'd suspect its' due to other parts of the computer. What about the GPU? it could be faulty if screen locks up.

How many Sandy-Bridges to run IBM's Watson?

The speed of Watson in researching the answer also factor into his response time. If Watson couldn't complete the query as fast, then it could not beat a human buzzer, despite Watson's quick electrical buzzing. We saw several times where Watson had the right answer but was beaten by human buzzer...

How many Sandy-Bridges to run IBM's Watson?

The spec says Watson backend has 2880 POWER7 processor cores, and my Penryn has 4 physical cores. Assuming they are equivalent at around 3.5Ghz. Watson could be 720 times more powerful, but probably quite a bit lower due to nature of parallel computing. I guess Watson isn't coming to my house...

Need fan replacement for old card (4850)

I have the very same card (until I swapped it for HD5870). I still have the 4850, and the fan is running OK, but could not keep pace to cool the core when the action is heavy (even w/ fan at 100%, and loud!) I have been thinking about it what to do with it. The ASUS OEM heat sink/cooling...

OCZ falsely advertising 25nm Vertex 2 drives?

I predict this will cost OCZ dearly when people think about buying other SF driven SSD. There are plenty of fish in the sea in this SSD market, OCZ really shouldn't have pulled a fast one to get some short term cost benefit.

SSD Interface - SATA or PCI-Express?

NewEgg had a sale on their OCZ SSD drive but it is using PCI-Express X4 instead of SATA interface. I wonder if PCI-Express X4 will provide faster I/O than SATA2 or 3?

Best Value 775 LGA Upgrade: Dual vs Quad?

get a used Q9550, or a cheaper 9450 if you can find it. For LGA775 upgrades, the only way to go to fully utilize this platform is to get a Quad, otherwise it's obsolete. Or you might as well wait a few months until they sort out 1155 and get a Sandybridge.

Do your dual screens need to match?

I run two 22" LCDs, one Dell and one Acer. You could go a different size, but I'd try to keep resolution similar when it's displayed, otherwise things just look weird when you move one window from one screen to another.

What is the highest video card that would make sense with an E8400 CPU?

Go get the HD5870!!! I went from 4850 to 5870, and still used the same Q9450 at 3.6GHz. The difference in gaming experience is substantial. I still don't do more than 1680x1050 so 4850 was working OK for me, but 5870 really made everything butter smooth. There are probably CPU bottlenecks, but...

Making sure BIOS pick stand-alone GPU over on-board integrated graphics output?

Thanks for the tip, yes, I tried that IGX config and disabled the internal Graphics mode (I guess I forgot to mention that above, it was the first thing I did). But it still goes to integrated graphics first on cold boot. But the next time around, it goes to PCI-E GPU. And when I go look at...

so what's the story with video cards with HDMI? do i get sound?

Making sure BIOS pick stand-alone GPU over on-board integrated graphics output?

Worth an upgrade from a 5850?

Just the cheapest card will do generally for Xfire. That said, you may consider getting one same brand as your existing one...or at least similar cooling capability. With 2 cards running side by side, you'll run into cooling issues if not careful, and you'd want both to have similar temps...

Multiple display set up - how does GPU perform compared to a single screen?

I've finally gone dual-screen now, and I do like the setup. I run the desktop extended to the other side. One thing that bothered me is when I play a video file, and when I drag and drop it over to the other screen, it stutters for a second. Keep in mind this is with HD5870 with 1GB of GDDR5...

    Wireless Graphics Card!!!

Ha...I remember when CAT5e was all the rage back then. Now I see homes and offices with blank recepticals made for all these LAN wires. To me, I'd still go wired if I possible, generally gives better speeds, reliability, and not to mention security.

    Ram for sandy bridge.

SB is nothing special with memory, you should pick whichever DDR3-1600 that runs the best timing at the default 1.5v. Key to overclocking memory is to not buy memory that's already overclocked, such as OCZ likes to do to their DDR3-1333, that they sell as DDR3-1600 running at 1.7v. Of those you...

    Who has the best quality?

The board qualities do vary even within the same brand, it's somewhat affected by their quality control standard and testing, which means flagship products should be better on average if you have a sample of 1000 units, but those tests and components also make them more expensive. But for the...

Will CPU-integrated graphics (Sandy/Ivy bridge) beat out board-integrated graphics?

With all this integration, it seems Intel is definitely forging into the graphics realm in a big way. Maybe that's their strategy to take a chunk of business away from AMD, other than just going head to head in CPU realm. This makes me wonder whether the market will follow Intel, or will the...

Is Sandforce "cheating" by citing read/write spec of high compressible data?

Maybe what's to do proper reviews of SSD to always do quote for compressible and incompressible data. For the incompressible data test, they could use a GB or two of data that is already highly compressed, such as tightly packed RAR, and/or Xvid AVI files. Showing both types of speeds should...
