Just got a new 4TB Seagate harddrive from a Blackfriday deal.
Put the new drive in and got it all set up. Also copied around 2TB of data to it.
Everything seems to be fine in that regard.
I did notice though that some of the CrystalDiskInfo appears to be off. E.g. the Read Error Rate...
Can anyone recommend a good (free?) MD5 checksum tool that can create a MD5 checksum for a large folder with hundreds/thousands of files and subfolders (e.g. a folder with 60GB of word docs, PDF files, etc in various sub-folders)?
All I can find are tools that generate individual file MD5...
Thanks for the response.
Might look into just installing a plain version of windows on it then (prob Win7 or Win8).
Apparently there is no limitation on the number of user accounts (aside from each taking up 1GB of space) which would allow me to set up shares with per user account permissions.
Using an SBS2008 server as a file server but this thing is slooooooow.
Takes 15-20 minutes to reboot, etc.
How can I speed this up? What unnecessary SBS crap can I uninstall?
This is literally being used as a DUMB NAS with 15 users configured to determine file access.
No domains, no...
Would need some confirmation that this also works for other brands as it is not that hard to find Win8 disks on the internet
BTW - [damn] Lenovo, Dell, etc for not longer providing disks.
No profanity in the tech forums, please

New laptops from most manufacturers don't come with a Windows install CD (VERY ANNOYING!!!!!).
Instead they force you to make a recovery USB stick.
What's the best way to create an image file of the USB stick with this win8 system recovery?
Would like to save that image on my server, so I can...
Then some genius please tell me how I am supposed to use a USB joystick with a tablet that only has bluetooth.
There are hundreds of cheap gamepads with bluetooth but no joysticks.
WTF?
WTF is wrong with PC gaming that apparently nobody makes joysticks anymore?
There is an abundance of stupid gamepads/game controllers (bluetooth and USB) but it appears impossible to find a "cheap" bluetooth joystick.
WTF?!
Looks like you posted in the wrong forum.

We have an SBS2003 server that is used as a file server.
People will see different versions of the file on the server which is really f****** annoying.
E.g.:
User 1 will see a file that was list modified on Oct 18, at 11:00am
User 2 will see the same file, only a version modified on Oct...
Thanks but I am not looking for generic instructions how to do this (I even posted the instructions that I followed in the OP).
My router does not do what it is supposed to ... that's what I am trying to fix.
I don't want to use it as a repeater.
I want to use it as a dumb wireless access point that is connected via ethernet to the main router. As wireless repeater I lose a lot of speed.
I follow the instructions to do this on the DD-WRT website to the T ... but the "dumb" router then becomes...
I followed the following instructions to set up a 2nd router as a wireless access point (connected to the primary router via ethernet):
http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Wireless_Access_Point
Followed the instructions exactly but when I apply the settings the 2nd router no longer is...
I was probably going to use it as a WHS for backups, with some file sharing and media serving. I am also planning to run zoneminder in a VM as a security system with 8+ USB cameras.
Aside from the zoneminder usage, there would not be a lot of heavy activity. The P4 is old (and usually seen as a...
Looking into building a new home server vs. just using an old dell desktop.
Option 1 - old Dell desktop:
The desktop is an old P4 dell and I was afraid of power usage but it idles around 70W.
My concerns otherwise are the low number of USB ports and the lack of SATA (all PATA baby!). I...
Ugh? I thought my question was quite straightforward: for a project such as mine, what is the best tech?
x10? (old, gets interference if too many devices, pretty open, so can be controlled with a custom solution?)
x-wave (proprietary but pretty widespread use and maybe can be controlled with...
I have started looking into Home Automation and the possibilities seem very cool.
Sadly, the state of home automation appears to be all over the map without any (big) open standards. Resources on the internet are also less than helpful as far as I have been able to find.
In an ideal world, I...
Server was working fine for 2 years.
Recently we had to move it and now it will not boot properly anymore: it usually hangs with a black screen after the "Microsoft Windows status bar" on startup. No mouse cursor, nothing.
I can get it to boot by booting into safe mode first but this is...
So far it looks like
2 for Smoothwall
2 for IPCop
1 for Astaro
0 for Mirotik (+1 -1 = 0)
It's for a small biz.
Pfsense is great but for the VPN issues (if there was a fix for that, they would be set).
We currently run Pfsense on an old desktop, which works very well with the exception of the problems inherent in BSD for VPN support.
As such, I will need to switch to another solution.
Any suggestions for good (and well/actively supported) linux solutions for a firewall/router. Stability...
Not always.
E.g: I have a Linksys WRT610n v1.1 running DD-WRT. It will run rock solid for 3-4 months at which point it will become impossible to connect via the 5GHz N network until I factory reset the router. To put it politely: that is FUCKING annoying.
Testing out a new hosted exchange provider who (stupidly) does not offer room/resource mailboxes forcing me to test a workaround.
We have 2 resource mailboxes: a conference call facility and a conference room.
I set both up as regular mailbox and set up a "generic" email as the delegate.
The...
We are currently using resource mailboxes to manage some of our conference rooms.
Since we want to switch hosted exchange providers, I want to explore the possibility of using Sharepoint instead of a resource mailbox. (This was recommended by one of the IT people at the potential new exchange...
Could you provide any additional information how the migration works?
In our case, we currently have 15 mailboxes and 2 resource mailboxes hosted at Apptix. Most mailboxes are around 1GB of data or less. One user has around 4GB of data. Due to the horribly experience with Apptix, we want to...
I was told (i) you get 4GB per mailbox which you can allocate as you want, eg one mailbox with 1GB and one with 7GB, and (ii) that they charge $12/year per additional GB above your total allocation.
Talked to godaddy and was very impressed with the customer service (they have also been great when we moved our website hosting there). Price wise they seem hard to beat.
Biggest issue I see now: how to migrate some 20GB of exchange data to a new provider. Uploading from a PST does not sound...
Really. Yet another "expert"!
Google will quickly point one to sipgate which offers the same service for a fraction of $25/user/month.
Thanks but no thanks to your advice.
Currently with Apptix and HATE their customer service - which is not only atrocious but RUDE.
Can anyone recommend any alternative hosted exchange providers that are any good.
Definitely want to move our company away, due to their rudeness.
