Slightly OT - Dual Mac G4 1.25GHz, can it run OS 9 natively?

It was definitely Photoshop 7 right out of the shrinkwrap. Maybe just the installer needed OS 9? <shrug>

How can I run an Exchange email server from my home?

Cox will block your outgoing emails. You'll have to send your outgoing SMTP traffic to one of Cox's SMTP servers. I do not know if they block incoming SMTP traffic but they definitely block outbound.

I just set up one of those dual 1.25'ers for a customer today. One of the apps I installed - Photoshop 7 I think, I guess doesn't like OS X so when I installed it, OS 9 automatically launched. I assume you want OS X completely off.

Windows XP Professional Single User, what is it?

Only time I've seen a reference like that is when purchasing an OEM copy - Single User meaning 1 copy instead of the 3-packs, 20-packs, etc.

Macintosh & W2K Integration

Can anyone point me to instructions or give me some insight in how to join a Mac running OS X to a W2K domain? If I can't do actual domain authentication, can you point me in the right direction on how to simply grant the Mac access to a file share on a W2K server? Thanks

Regular unbuffered memory is what you want. Your board probably doesn't support registered memory anyway. FAQ

Poor HD Tach numbers on SCSI 15K drive?!

Another Raid question

You have to define your array first - Ctrl-A or whatever keystroke to get into the Raid setup. After that, you need to press F6 when prompted at the beginning of the XP setup routine in order to load the Raid driver from diskette.

Just go to crucial.com and plug in your notebook's model # to ensure you get the right stuff. It's probably SDRAM in a SODIMM module that you need.

An Early Christmas!

So today in the mail arrives this in the 2 x 512M flavor. This was shipped direct from OCZ. I did order 2 256M sticks of the regular EL memory a few months ago and two 512M sticks of the regular EL stuff a few weeks ago from Axiontech but I never ordered these. No invoice or charge for this...

P3 Motherboard Replacement

That system likely uses a proprietary power supply, front case connections, etc. If it's old enough, it may have proprietary RAM as well but I think IBM started getting away from that with the P2's.

printer epson color stylus 740 problems

I gave up on Epson because of the same thing. Unless you print frequently, the heads clog and you use a ton of ink to clean them or you end up tossing the printer.

scsi problems...

Most SCSI drives have a jumper that tells the drive to not spin up until the host adapter queries it. This helps to not put a strain on your powersupply when you have many drives in a system coming on at once. If that jumper is set, your drive shouldn't spin up until your SCSI adapter starts...

Connecting at 115kbs on a 56k modem???

This happens if the modem connects at a speed that isn't defined in it's .inf file. When that happens, Windows just reports the link speed (speed at which the PC is talking to the modem which is usually 115200). His modem is not connected to his ISP at that speed. Getting the latest .inf file...

"Connection Failed" with DCC in mIRC

In your mirc options, change the DCC ports to a smaller range - mine is set to 1024 for the first and 1030 for the last. On your router, open ports 1024-1030. Do whatever you need to blackice to let it pass the traffic on those ports.

Backup software for Win XP Pro

Xp's built-in backup program works well. If you need something with more features such as easy scheduling, etc., BackupMyPC does the job and works with XP. (Formerly BackupExec Desktop Edition from Veritas)

Thanks - i'll check it out. I've used Hyena for years in previous jobs and couldn't survive without it. However, my current gig is short term deals, etc., and not much day-to-day management and monitoring which Hyena excels at. Thanks again.

are 4MM DAT backup tapes limited to 20GB max? (uncompressed?) can you get 40/80 tapes in 4MM DAT size? (Not DLT?)

Certance (formally Seagate's tape drive division) just came out with 72GB DAT tapes (36GB uncompressed). They use DAT-72 tapes.

sonicwall vpn and remote xp pro desktop

Can you ping the workstation you are trying to connect to? Opening the ports don't matter if your VPN connection is configured properly but for non-VPN connections, Remote Desktop only needs 3389 opened, no others.

Problem Deleting File

.avi file perhaps? I know there are other methods but what I do is open a command window and change to the directory where the file is. In Task Manager, end the explorer.exe process. After you do that, you can delete the file from the command prompt. When done, just do File, Run, explorer or...

Just found it. 2002 has autodiscovery but only if you purchase the 'Enterprise Network Tools' addin which has been discontinued.

Visio 2000 Enterprise Edition was the one with the 'autodiscovery' feature. It was removed from 2002 I believe (not sure) and they claim it will be included in 'a network management suite planned for a future date'. It is not in Visio 2003.

The built in mail service can be accessed by any POP3 client - no need to be domain authenticated. However, it is just a simple POP3 server - no shared folders, calenders, etc., like Exchange has. With Exchange, you can do the shared stuff, etc., and you can hit it remotely using Outlook Web...

Windows 98 maximum time between reboots?

The bug was 49.7 days. When it was discovered in 1999 I believe, MS said they would release a 'fix' but as far as I know, it never was released. The bug affected 95 and 98. Not in the mood to go link hunting.

That is not true. Your Dell/Gateway/HP/whatever came with an OEM copy. By getting the OS for half price retail, you live with the stipulation that it can only be used on the PC it was sold with.
