$50 graphics card? 1920x1440x75Hz is not an uncommon res on a 21" CRT. What $500 graphics card do you suggest that will do that?

DVI compatibilty on HDTV televisions

It works, but you won't get a picture from the 8500 until Windows loads. With a GF4 (maybe all NVidia cards with DVI?), you can see the post and boot up process too. Windows see DVI/HDCP as a "Plug and Play Digital Monitor".

You miss my point: that 1920x1280 at 85Hz - your example, not mine - is already way beyond what a single-link DVI can deliver.

You probably wouldn't want to use DVI on a high end monitor anyway, since its going to limited to 165MHz of video bandwidth. Even a double-link is going to fall well below the max afforded by today's 350 and 400MHz DACs.

Umm... 720x576 (5:4) is the CCIR 601 standard. All PAL DVDs are recorded at 720x576, not the "square pixel" PAL resolution of 768x576.

I want your opinions on Daytek monitors.

I happen to be using one of those right now - paid CN$395 for it 3 months ago. It has been a very decent performer, with good ergonomics and very good picture quality. At a max 96kHz it is a bit limited in terms of horizontal scan frequency, but I've run it occassionally at 160Hz w/o problems...

Interesting OC results from g3

Use a different utility to overclock - some of them are simply unreliable. (When the GF3 first came out, many review sites reported no gains in overclocking - they simply assumed Coolbits and utilities based on it worked, when it fact nothing was being changed.)

21 inch monitor ---- IIyama i20a 22" for $660 or SAMSUNG 1200NF for $700?

A couple of other reasons to favor the Samsung: higher frequency range (up 185Hz v. and 121kHz. h., vs. 160Hz v. and 110kHz for the IIyama), and a USB hub. If you shop around, you'll find there's no price difference - at least in the mail-order channel.

The second "head" on the 8500 passes thru an external Analog Devices 240MHz DAC. You get independent resolutions in XP w/o any additional software, and up to 2048x1536 on the second monitor. The big caveat with the current XP drivers is that the monitor you connect to the 2nd head absolutely...

Unless I'm mistaken "Storm" was the internal code name for the MGA 2064W - Millenium I. If it has a device ID of 0x0519, that's it. You should be able to find lots of info - and drivers - for it over at Matrox's site.

Can someone give me some thoughts about these Dual Head display card?

I don't know how robust the professional 3D capabilities are, but the Radeon 7500 can handle resolutions as high as 2560x1920, which neither of the other two can approach, and the second "head" can do at least 2048x1536.

The maximum rating on the DAC specifically indicates what the maximum resolution and refresh rate the card is capable of outputing. Nothing more... It does NOT tell you what the quality of that output will be, and it certainly has nothing to do with performance as that's usually measured...

Careful with the ones labelled "GTS Pro" - you may find that the "Pro" addendum to "GTS" is just a marketing trick. GeForce2 GTS: 200MHz core/333MHz memory GeForce2 Pro: 200MHz core/400MHz memory GeForce2 GTS "Pro": very likely to be 200MHz core/333MHz memory
