question about CNAME and/or domain forwarding wrt SSL certs

 Trust generally requires 4 basic things: 1. That the name on the cert matches the name your client is using (i.e. "www.domain.com") 2. That the date on the cert is currently valid 3. That the source that issued the cert is trusted 4. That the cert is not listed on the...

    Can't install Windows Vista SP1 RC1

Yes review that thread and check the windowsupdate.log file; but truth is (esp given that SP1 RTMd today) I wouldn't bother trying to install it or get support until you can get your hands on the RTM bits (another month away). Now that the development team is in release mode we're not going...

is it absolutely necessary to install the zune software?

I'm in agreeance; in general I dont mind the Zune software but I'd rather manage devices like this independently. Didnt iPods used to be this way a long time ago? I wonder what the reason for removing the ability to manage them 'externally' was.

Database rebuild - still slow on new hardware

Have you done any performance monitoring to try and identify the bottleneck (assuming it's hardware related)? It could be beneficial to review the subsystems side-by-side to see what takes the biggest hit (CPU, memory, disk, etc.) I also like the idea of separating the application from the...

    windows small business server 2003

For inbound email you need a registered domain name and you need a MX record on the DNS server for that domain to point to your server. In addition you'll need to configure exchange/your accounts to have email addresses under the domain.

Has anyone here had to deal with public folders in Exchange '07?

I've installed it in the lab and in one small deployment and havent had any issues. One thing to keep in mind is that if all you want is the tools you can install the SP1 tools and leave your server(s) running gold.

    XP defragger for Vista?

So use the CLI or a 3rd party defrag utility; this thread is nothing more than a rant that MSFT didn't re-write the pretty GUI for Vista, it has little to do with actual functionality. That you make this comment is a pretty good indication that you dont fully understand the core concepts here...

As memory serves it's the x86 to x64 architecture change that stops you from upgrading. You can upgrade XP x64 to Vista x64 and x86 XP to x86 Vista but not x86 to x64. Not that I've ever tried any of them...

    XP defragger for Vista?

I've used AusLogic's Disk Defrag a couple of times, but only because I've got a lot of VMs running on my desktop and I was looking for ways to try and improve I/O performance (it didn't make a discernible difference BTW). As others have already said the built-in defragger in Vista is more...

    Upgrade CPU Without Reinstalling Windows?

 for mechbgon and nothingman. Since you are already running the SMP HAL you can go from 2 to 4 (to as many as 8 if you have dual quad cores) without any OS changes. It's only if you go from the uniproc HAL to a multiproc HAL that you run into issues (which are also easily...

    How to locate rogue AP?

Do you have a rogue detector setup? If there is an unencrypted rogue connected to your wired LAN the system can detect it for you. So I have to ask, if you are already able to get their location data what is it that you are looking for? Up until now I thought you were just trying to find...

    Outlook 2007 and multiple connections

I suppose as a possible work around you could specify some static routes so that your path to that server was always through the wireless connection: route add x.x.x.x 255.255.255.255 y.y.y.y metric 1 where x.x.x.x is the IP address of your mail server and y.y.y.y is the wireless gateway IP...

    TCP/IP and Subnetting

The /29 is shorthand for 255.255.255.248 (29 consecutive bits flipped on) The network is 202.16.105.24, broadcast is 202.16.105.31 and there are only 6 addresses for hosts. Sounds like you need to learn more about subnetting in binary before you move forward, if you do this will make a lot...

IP Cop, smoothwall? do they reduce latency?

It depends on the hardware. Purpose built routers route in hardware and can be very fast, granted most of the consumer hardware does not fall into this bucket.

Outlook doesn't care what kind of connection it is using, I'd start by fixing your connectivity on the Wired side.

VMWare Server on Windows XP vs. VMWare Server on Linux

It is purely anecdotal, what's most important is that your hardware has VT support, you have enough RAM and fast enough storage. In other words the hardware is far more important.

    Wireless Better/Faster Than Wired?

Most of it's already been said however one other thing comes to mind and that is that wireless is essentially half-duplex. If you have multiple streams your speed is going to get cut down very quickly. FYI I've seen bench tests pushing as much as 180Mb/sec through Cisco's 1250 (WiFi Alliance...

    How to locate rogue AP?

You forgot to mention one of the best features, rogue containment (mitigation). Where your Cisco APs run a DOS against the rogue APs rendering them essentially useless. Actually that wouldn't work well, since many computers still power the NIC even when they are shut down (so the link light...

IP Cop, smoothwall? do they reduce latency?

Adding in something like IP Cop, Smoothwall, etc. is going to add some latency, especially if you are pushing a lot of traffic through it and/or the hardware is slow enough that it causes an issue. That said it's likely not going to add enough latency to be an issue, if you're using hardware...
