    I have the combo AMD XP 2400+ (Thornton boxed) with ECS from Fry's for a couple weeks now. I believe a Thornton CPU is actually a Barton with half of the cache (with 256KB instead of 512 KB) disabled from manufacturer for whatever reasons. I overclock it slightly in ASUS A7N8X, works great.

    BTW, this does not sound like you're having RAM problems. Bad RAMs will cause your computer to freeze (locked up), nothing moves then, not even the "three finger salute" CTRL+ALT+DEL works. Only the hardware "Reset" button could unfreeze your computer.
