    Try going into the BIOS to see if it is auto detected. Also, which IDE channel is it hooked up to? Do you have the Master/Slave settings correct? If you're running Windows XP, try running the Add New Hardware Wizard.

    Something that has worked for me is to use it as a Slave drive. Find another hd that already has an OS installed. Hook it up as a slave drive & try to boot your computer up. If it comes up, then start copying files like mad into the other HD.

    Yeah, it's definitely doable. I've installed XP on PII 400 PII 350 K6 400 But like redbeard said, it is slow. I run the PII 400 with 256 MB of RAM. It goes ok cause I'm used to it. If you could spend $1000 though, you may just look at upgrading the whole thing.

    Check Under Power Management. To do this, right-click on your desktop. Go to properties. Under Screensaver, there should be a button to adjust Power. Make sure Turn Off Hard Disks is set to Never. I'm looking at XP Pro so not 100% sure it's the same path.
