Asus A7N8X Deluxe sound issues

I'm using the built in SoundStorm system, and certain games (So far just Diablo 2 and Raven Shield) occasionally cause a horrible rasping sound. It's very obvious and obviously not right. I tried disabling EAX and 3D Audio in Raven Shield and the problem did not go away. Help!

AMD 500mhz, Geforce 2, 128 megs of ram.. still can't play movie files with out slowing down (update with system specs)

Try some ALi Drivers from their site, it might be that. The P5A is the M1541 chipset. And geez guys, the K6-2 isn't that bad. It's outdated but still useful. The K6-III and K6-III+ are actually pretty good processors (got one at 550 MHz); can play Ut2k3 on it.

Converting one drive into a RAID array

Without losing all of my data on my hard drive, would it be possible to convert it to a RAID 0 array if my second hard drive is blank? Both are 60 GB.

How do computers multiply numbers?

I got into an arguement about this with a friend. To multiply a number (say, 5 x 4) can computers do direct multiplication with the FPU or do they have to add four 5's together? I know before the days of FPU's the latter was true, but does it still apply today?

are hard drives becoming disposable media?

Hard drives will eventually fail (as with all mechanical devices) but they should last longer then a few years. The majority of my 8 year old WD drives still function although they are slow. You also have to be careful because the older drives may be getting bogged down with Windows crap, and...

The PC133 is hurting you really badly, the SiS735 chipset isn't the best thing in the world (although it's not bad), and he probably has his video card overclocked.

Does anyone notice how in this review the minimum fps on the Athlon XP processors are higher than the P4 processors?

There are some spots where the P4's SSE2 won't help very much, which is probably why it can dip way down. (We all know SSE2 support and use varies quite a bit.) The Athlon has a strong FPU to "crunch" through those situations without having to rely on SIMD too much. I'm taking a guess, don't...

Dell/Intel has better price/performance than AMD?

The GF4-MX they have listed is probably a MX-420 or MX-440, not a MX-460. (Yes, I know it says DDR but they do have MX-420 DDR variants now). Also, I I tried your link again and it came to $918 with a 30 gig value drive...

Ok, this is gotta be the lamest "Help Me!" thread out there!!!

I was at a friend's house running a WinXP beta version (this guy was a former Microsoft employee) and it was blazing away on a Pentium 100. A P-166 should run WinXP fine as long as it has lots of memory to back it up.

Anyone know the transfer speeds of PIO, DMA, M-DMA, right off the top of their head?

PIO-4 has a maximum of 16.6 MB/sec, but putting those two drives on the same channel shouldn't cause any problems.

Solid State Drives?

Not necessarily true. A solid state drive will have dramatically better latencies and seek times. Also, mechanical drives get slower as they near the center of the disk - not true with a solid state drive.

I would get the Asus board, because the ATI-based integrated graphics only has a single pixel pipeline and no T&L. Basically, you're getting a graphics core that's slower then a TNT2...

Ok, I need some help with this. If I had a "SuperBright" LED, rated at 2.1 V and 20 mA, what kind of resistor would I need to hook it up to a pair of Alkaline or Nickel-Metal Hydride Batteries? (Alkaline AA batteries are 1.5 V each while NiMH batteries are 1.2 V.) Thanks!

How loud is 39 dba?

For a comparison... High speed Delta fans can exceed 60 dba, Panaflo fans are generally around 22 dba, a jumbo jet at takeoff is around 100 dba (I think). 39 dba for a harddrive is loud - it'll probably make a consistant, audible whining sound.

Either way, you can't really go wrong - both Intel and AMD offer a ton of performance for your dollar. No, the P4 is not more stable then the Athlon XP. That's a myth that's been reused over and over. Any instabilities come from the chipset - and I admit that VIA chipsets aren't very good...
