Any ideas? I'm living in China, btw, so it could be that the wiring is poor (though I had no problems at my other apartment, and this one is even newer).

I recently moved to another apartment so I just get my laptop set up, plug everything in, flip the switch on my external hard drive (which was working perfectly before) but instead of spinning up to a reassuring click and steady blue glow, it starts spinning up and back down again with the led...
Thanks for the suggestions guys -- I think I'll try removing the rear grating first, and if that doesn't help enough, see what I can do as far as a low-profile mod to the front goes.
Windows is on the machine right now, and it seems to be running fine through the vaious installation processes...
Tried that, and it keeps it around the same as when I had the cover off with the fan on it (~50C idle). I don't think they'll really be wanting to keep a fan trained on it at all times, though...
I think I'm gonna just go ahead with installing windows and hope it stays stable. Maybe I can...

I tried removing the 3.5 in faceplate, but didn't really see any change in temps (maybe 1 degree lower)

I've got DVD burner, 7200 rpm hdd, and a Radeon 9200 PCI vid card in -- that's all. If I were to return the prescott to Newegg, do you think they'd be able to get...
Ok, I pulled the case off and aimed a 10 inch table fan at it -- the system temps have dropped to ~30C, and the CPU temp is hovering around 49C. I'm not sure how I could go about adding airflow to the case itself, as it's very small, and my friend is adverse to any extreme modding... Any ideas...
I just built a SFF box (Shuttle ST62K "Zen") for a friend of mine who will be taking it back to Japan with them in a week. They don't do much gaming or any overclocking, so I thought it would be fine just to use the sticky, white thermal compound that came with Shuttle's I.C.E. heatpipe cooling...
Well, I did as you suggested and cleaned it with and eraser and alcahol, and now it works! It didn't seem very dirty at all, despite its age, but it must have been just enough to keep it from making a good connection.
Thanks!

Well, I was tested a GeForce FX 5200 PCI card just to make sure it gave a signal (I entered the BIOS right away and then shut it down) -- and now the old AGP card (a Radeon 7200 VIVO) no longer gives a signal; I just get the long and two short beeps of a video error code.
I really don't...
Has anyone tried these with a cheap-o mouse pad? In most of the reviews I see, the reviewer tries 'em out with a Ratpadz or Everglide or something similar. I'm currently using a cloth Fellowes pad that I picked up somewhere for a few bucks, and am wondering whether I should upgrade to a better...
I recently switched to Windows XP Pro (from Windows 2000) and can't stand having to drag my Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 all over my mouse pad in order to get anywhere on my 19" monitor. The slider in the mouse control panel is set to the fastest setting, but it's still nowhere near as fast as it...
Well, even though I'd double checked all connections and seatings, I decided to pull each part out one by one and reconnect everything. It turned out to be the vid card. I guess it wasn't quite in all the way or something... Anyway, I'm glad it was nothing too serious. :)

I just built a new system for my parents using the Shuttle AK35GT2... and it won't post. The screen remains completely blank when I hit the power. The post code it gives is one long beep followed by two short, quick beeps. I have no idea what this means, since they neglected to include post code...
Well, I waited it out. And after 5.5 hours total, it finally finished... kinda. It never did complete the resizing of the 3rd partition, but atleast my data was still intact. So I backed it up and resized it the safe way -- by deleting the partition and recreating it anew ;).

Well, I partitioned my new WD 120GB into three sections (6.77GB, 40GB, and 65GB) using the PartitionMagic boot disks. I installed Win XP pro to the 1st partition, programs/games to the 2nd, and left the 3rd for data. I then decided that I could use an extra 5GB on the 3rd partition that wasn't...
Just a heads-up -- My order came in about half an hour ago. I got the WD 120GB (SE 8MB Cache), Cendyne 52x24x52 (Lite-on LTR-#####S), Kyphermedia 100pk CDRs (48x speed), 100pk Kypher jewel cases, and some perm. markers to bring it over $250. I placed my order around noon on Sunday and live in...
I'm suffering from random crashes in which my computer reboots itself -- I even tried reformatting and reinstalling everything to no avail. I just now checked the Windows event viewer and noticed that there was a corresponding "DHCP Error" at the time of every crash. It gives the following...
I've been having problems lately -- first, I thought my graphics card had died (it would display colored vertical lines when I tried to play a game or watch a video -- and later, randomly for no apparent reason). So I replaced it with a new Radeon 8500 (clean install on a reformatted system...
Thanks Pink0! That was it. All but Primary IDE 0 were set to PIO only. Everything is great now (*waits for random BSOD after having said that*).
jrichrds: I can't remember the exact version number (and it doesn't show up in device properties) -- but I'm pretty sure I'm using the latest driver...
Nope, I've tried about four different 4in1s (newest, 2nd newest, 3rd newest, one that came with my mobo...). And I still have the same slowdown. I really think it starting occuring after I changed it to "Standard PC" -- but I did that to fix the fatal crashes :(.

Yeah, I plan on staying away from via with the next rig i buid -- but, the things is, I never had a problem with slow data transfer rates before... As in, before my recent reformat...

I recently reformatted and installed a new video card (Radeon 8500le) -- after which I had some IRQ problems (lag caused by interferences with my promise controller card) which I solved by reverting back to the windows 2000 service pack 2. But then, a few days ago, I started experiencing crashes...
Through some testing I found that it is an IRQ conflict after all. Basically, my controller card needs to be on an IRQ of it's own (the lag occurs whenever it's sharing with anything). How would I go about manually setting the IRQ for it? No matter what PCI slot I install it in, it is always...
I just bought a new Radeon 8500LE from Newegg.com to replace my broken Radeon 64MB VIVO (broken because it would lock up and give strange, colored, vertical lines whenever I tried to play a game or video). So before I installed it, I decided it was time for a reformat and reinstallation of...
Hmmmmm..... I hadn't been around these forums for a while -- kinda sad to see how badly they've degenerated. I remember a time when "elite" and "platinum" members were actually kind, even if they couldn't/wouldn't help. Your responses, while obviously humerous to some, are nothing but cheap...
My school recently added a new feature to their firewall that can supposedly determine what program you are using to send stuff through, and effectively limit the bw of that send. It allegedly limits it to 5% of total available bw, but I'm lucky if I can get send speeds of 3 kb/s (even to...
Ok, I found my boot.ini file and it looks like this:
[boot loader]
timeout=1
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft...
I just got a 2nd hard drive from a friend; it's an older one that he didn't need anymore, but I thought I could get some use out of it. I'm running Win2k on my primary hard drive, and I wanted to format the 2nd one to NTFS as well, so I booted from the 4 Win2k setup disks with my primary hdd as...
I'm wanting to set up an ftp so that I can share an anime music video of mine on the internet. At first I was looking around for a free file hosting site, but none of the ones I found would allow storage of a file 35 mb in size. So someone recommended that I try setting up my own ftp using...
Well, I finally got it to work. I had to try three different PCI slots though. It must have been conflicting with my sound card somehow.
Thanks for all the suggestions,

LordAccord: Running Windows 98SE
white: I only see jumper options for Master, Slave, Cable Select, and Dev 0. Also, it's not halting on the hd detection (it detects everything just fine and then moves on). It gives the PCI listing, then "Starting Windows 98", then C:\>...
I just bought a new Ultra 100 Promise controller card, and I am unable to get it to work properly (or at least just what I consider properly). I'm wanting to run my hard drive and my 54x CD drive off the controller card, both set to master on separate cables. Then I would run my DVD drive...
I just got a new Promise ATA/100 controller, and I'm wanting to bench my hard drive before and after installing it. All I really have for benchmarking right now is SiSoft Sandra, but I've heard it's not very good for hdd benching. So what good, free utilities are out there hard drive benching? I...
