**Updated 9/9** New 2006 Civic on sale TODAY

Up again! :) Just read the Insideline article on the new US model Civic, and I just had to make the comment that though the US model looks great compared to the last one, again I think that the euro Civic looks a lot better. See for yourself: Euro: pic1 pic2 pic3 pic4 US: pic1...

YACT: test my auto mechanic knowledge

I have the exact same problem with the exact same engine (-97 Lumina, 50k miles). With AC on the temps never climb over half of the gauge, but it goes up to 3/5 and even 3/4 the way in hot weather without AC. Although my mechanic disagrees with me, I believe that the problem is that the...

Which car, currently not available in North America, would you like to own.

Which car, currenly available in the US but not in the EU area, would I like to be able to buy? The Pontiac Bonneville GXP would be one. I can't believe what a crappy lineup GM has in European market: trash-can looking, quality problem ridden Opel for the mainstream, dull and overpriced +...

You're right, a java applet would do the trick. It's possible to pretty much freelt access the local filesystem from a signed applet.

    HTML Form population.

You cannot. This is a security-related feature, since otherwise you could download files off the user's computer using form file inputs and javascript. An exploit would look something like this: <div style="display:none"> <form target="http://my.server.com" enctype="multipart/form-data">...

Firefox, or any recent Mozilla-based browser. In my experience, a lot more complete CSS2 and DOM2 javascript support. In fact, in this respect Mozilla browsers are even far beyond IE.

Questions on upcoming AMD 64FX CPUs...

Just a thing to consider; the Socket-940 might have a long-term upgrade path as it's possible to use 100-series (ie. a single-processor model) Opterons on a Socket-940 Athlon/FX motherboard. And the Opteron's not going to have a change in the form factor anytime soon.

Cross Platform Programming Language with GUI interface...?

Java + Swing is the way to go. Java is fully platform-independent, and the fully-featured GUI-building package Swing has been a standard part of it since v1.3.1. With Swing you can even make the GUI look almost identical on all platforms (using the default platform-independent look&feel).

    GeForce 3 T5 vs GeForce 4 T4600

While it's true that CPU greatly contributes to gaming experience, the above statement in itself is false. It only takes a very baseline system, I'd say Athlon/P3 at around 1GHz, to be videocard-limited even with Ti/4600 at certain situations. For instance, UT 2002 at 1152x864/FSAA is video card...

Help me kick this hardrive's ass

You should get a new hard drive, install OS on that drive and then connect the IBM onto the system as a slave. Just because the drive's not bootable doesn't mean the data can't be read at all. It may just have certain crucial boot related sectors gone bad.

Stop bashing Radeon's "fake" Anisotropic Filtering

This is IMO the best example showing that while Radeon 8500's anisotropic filtering is fast and looks good on right-angled surfaces, it does not work correctly in all cases. I am unsure whether this has to do with the shape of Radeon's anisotropic filter subsampling pattern, or the way the chip...

NEW Maxtor D740X 20GB making alot OF NOISE

The D740x isn't the quietest of drives, mine makes clearly audible clicks over case fans when seeking heavily. But assuming the drive's OK, the idle noise levels should be very low. It sounds like your new drive is having a bearing problem, I've heard of quite a few cases where D740x drives...

Radeon 7500 cards "Powered by ATi": Do I Need to worry about quality or anything?

One should always keep in mind that it is entirely up to the card manufacturer how the final 2D image quality of a video card is. You don't have to look hard for the proof. The 2D image quality of Matrox Gxxx, 3dfx Voodoo3/4/5 and ATI Rage/Radeon series cards have been praised in the past, and...

    **ATTENTION 3DFX USERS**

Nvidia has drivers out that allow their TNT2 to run with Windows XP, that card is something like 4-5 years old which is an eternity in the PC world. TNT2 was released in H1/1999, so that would only make it roughly 3 years old. Still, that's an eternity in PC world ;)

AMD Trademarks Opteron and Metaron for Hammer

Mustang was the codename for the 256KB L2 cache version of the Thunderbird. Such a beast was seriously planned? That's incredible! :P Eventually they only made the Spitfire, which is the 128KB L2 cache version of the Thunderbird, due to a lack of market acceptance. Actually, Mustang was a...

    Seeking Noises From Maxtor D740X-6L

My 80GB 740DX makes the same noises under extremely heavy seeks (such as multiple services starting during windows boot-up), but I'm fairly confident they're normal. NV 30 Specs (Rumored)

Glide was the best capable 3D API, good to see it back. Propietary APIs like Glide only came to be because D3D was in it's infancy, and because for some odd reason no consumer card manufacturer saw OpenGL as a viable alternative until GLQuake came out. Since D3D has matured and every GFX chip...

Car decision... Audi TT v. A4

Just out of curiosity, why do so many americans seem to be aiming for a brand new car at a certain budget? We have the most expensive cards in the world here in Finland (over 100% VAT for new cars), so I've given this a lot of thought. I'm confident that you'll get the best possible car by...

I don't want to loose faith in AMD!

Are you sure that setting FSB to 266MHz doesn't raise the PCI (33MHz) and AGP (66MHz) clocks out-of-spec? If for some reason or another the BIOS doesn't change the dividers as you up the clock, the system would be extremely unstable.

Hammer = the end of the overclock?

While Hammer won't have a FSB in the traditional sense, not being an asynchronous piece of silicon, it still needs a system clock. And this is most definitely provided by a clock generator on the motherboard. That naturally means that overclocking is possible ;)

*AMD Demos First ClawHammer and SledgeHammer at IDF! Now Updated with Anand's Pics!*

Keep in mind that as a serial bus, Hammer's 16-bit 800MHz DDR HT implementation takes two bus cycles to complete a 64-bit DRAM word transfer (probably more, since HT is a packet-based protocol...I believe the command packet is another 64-bits). You should note that while on current system...

    AMD's heat problem really hurts
