Fan Speed control software for laptops?

In the past, I've used SpeedFan to monitor CPU temps and control the speed of the fans in my desktop. But it doesn't appear to work with my eMachines M6807. Is there anything similar for notebooks, specifically the eMachines M6807?

Of what use are WinXP/Win2k memory dumps?

I used the dumps once to isolate some bad hardware or software on my system. There is a dumpchk utility which helps you decode the information. You can read more here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=315263

Are there any PC notebooks that resemble the Apple Powerbooks?

Averatec has some silver colored notebooks. I don't think they look nearly as sleek as my Powerbook though.

iBook/powerbook Fuzy text in MS WORD?

System Preferences -> Appearance Turn off text smoothing for font sizes ___ and smaller. This is a global setting for OS X. I'm not sure if/how if affects MS Word. On a side note, it may be worth checking out Abiword.

My 15" 1.5Ghz Powerbook came in about a week ago. Customizations: 128 VRAM 512 Ram - 1 stick Combo Drive 5400 80GB I downgraded the SuperDrive. Although tempting, I have yet to use the DVD burner on my eMachines M6807, so I didn't think I would get much use out of it on my Powerbook either...

12" powerbook vs 15" powerbook

I chose the 15". I could use the extra screen space for development IDEs. The PC card slot may come in handy later too. It was a tough decision. If you have an apple store around, go try them both out.

Buying my first notebook

Also look into the student Apple Developer Connection (ADC) if you decide to go the powerbook route. With the ADC discount, the 15" powerbook falls into your price range. But, they will verify your student status.

State Tax holidays

Thanks for the tax free info. Unfortunately, GA tax free only covers PCs/laptops under $1500. Its too low to cover my powerbook purchase. I'll probably have it shipped to one of my addresses in NC or SC where there's no price cap.

Software Development Notebook

Widescreens are nice too. You get a little more space for the IDEs. I have an eMachine M6807 (AMD64). It has worked for my CS classes thus far. I also plan on getting an Apple PowerBook. OS X, cooler looking java, *nix base, chick magnet :).

64 bit Linux

Anyone gotten ndiswrapper working on 64bit linux? I can't get the Broadcom 94306 wireless card in my eMachines M6807 working in MDK 9.2 AMD64. I had to tweak one file that was using non 64bit friendly assembly instruction to get the wrapper to compile. I got the module to load, but it fails...
