WSJ article on how Ukrainians are coping with the reduced power in Kyiv.
Basically they are figuring out how to make it work but a struggle.
Putin is getting older and after such a defeat, I am not so worried that he will be back if Russia is completely kicked out.
Russia being back, that is a different story. Same basic government left in place but a new strongman on top does not bode well.
Decent chance the whole federation falls...
Zero intention of changing my posting style.
Updates (short articles) on NYT iOS app have no share icon to give a link. I have already linked to update “thread” in the past and it scrolls.
So I quoted the actual article and stated the source and date (today).
There is no forum rule that links...

Here’s what we know:
Ukrainians in Kherson were celebrating Russia’s retreat but also told visiting New York Times journalists they feared Moscow would strike back.”
From NYT today. Is it ok if Ukrainians in Kherson express this concern as well or do they get scolded for “doom and gloom”...
Water is more a concern than electricity. If you can heat up a room even for an hour, you can partially seal it and keep warm through the night. I have been out camping in the ice and snow often enough to know that staying warm enough is not that hard.
Water to drink and for toilets /...
Unfortunately I expect the Russians to pretty immediately start shelling Kherson and turn it into even more of a ruin than their occupation made it.
Won’t stop until they are defeated across all of Ukraine and a peace deal is reached.
I am guessing that next up is pressuring the coastal areas...

The lead of this story is Kherson, but there is also a discussion about large Russian casualties in the East.
Because there were a series of posts about the big Russian losses and when I went looking for something on it, instead I saw that the NYT was talking about Russian advances.
Ukraine is losing troops there as well. I assume since it is so non-strategic, that they are so actively defending...
There is no verification to the CNN quoted price and they are all purchased from an unidentified UK company (the ones with the higher price quoted). Seems like incomplete reporting to me.
There are different rates for different types of service. You cannot compare a fixed location personal service to what a military unit may be doing.
I know, now he is viewed as a “right wing” guy, so he is bad bad bad. But this thread is going well beyond what was in the article.
I lived in Singapore for 3 years and found the city great (still find it great). Lots of things to do and plenty of local color.
I preferred Bangkok for just going out and having fun.
Taipei is pretty good as well. Tokyo I went 10+ times and not quite as good for me.
That whole area will be...
At the risk of not being Ukraine, I visited Hong Kong so often that I have a frequent visitor barcode that allows me to use the residents line at immigration. I have not been their since Covid started and the really big changes are only the last couple of years so I have not seen the new...

Staunchly pro Ukraine.
In the winner takes all part of USA politics I respect the...
I think it is a matter of reading into what is said by the other side based in your expectations going in. There was plenty of analysis and a follow-up quote from him saying what is the big deal, don’t you want more bang for the buck and no blank cheque?
He personally voted for the previous aid...
I can understand the political motives of posters here saying that it is just the evil Republicans that want to cut aid to Ukraine, but that is not the case and has never been the case.
Blowing through the smoke of the politics and and election coming, I think that there is enough support on...
If and when Ukraine wants to negotiate is the right time to negotiate. Russia can always surrender and sue for peace if waiting for Ukraine is too long.
CNN is reporting claims by Ukraine that Russia is evacuating their better troops from Kherson.
I thought one of the points of the operation was to isolate and capture/destroy these troops and that the crossings were in range to be hit.
Not much news at all from Ukraine in that area, but if the...
This is where US Army Corp of Engineers and the equivalent in other NATO nations need to get as many power stations up and running as possible.
Other possible solutions are solar panel and battery combinations, the type used for RV and such. They can keep phone running for days and power small...
ISW blog today basically said that Russia is sending recruits to prop up the front line and probably will blow the dam to stop Ukraine from the pursuit of them once they cross the river. Leaving the recruits behind.
Twitter has lots of posts about Russia telling all civilians to get out of Kherson and the normal assortment of posts claiming that Russian forces have destroyed all the UA as they resist attacks.
Not sure how people are supposed to leave Kherson if the bridges are all messed up.
Yes, but they also want subscriptions, so they need to appeal to their base as well. Plus the reproters know the editorial bias and how to write their articles.
But, sure, they are a for profit company (kind of, they are more like the second catagory of media you listed after Bezos bought...
Then why tag me on a random article on US politics? I am not a a Republican Party leader, there is zero chance that my district will be Republican so will have no bearing on the mid term results.
So Trump is going to win the mid terms? And I should extrapolate not "expanding the spending" and "no blank cheque" (that does not exist now) into USA will join Putin and invade from the other side and split Ukraine like Nazi Germany and Russia did to Poland in WW2? Or whatever fantasy pops into...
However, Ukraine is claiming that if shot down over 80% of the drones launched against their capitol, so that is some sign of hope.
“
Ukraine shot down 85-86% of Russian drones involved in latest attacks, air force says
Ukraine has destroyed 37 Russian drones since Sunday evening, around 85-86%...
This is my longer term worry. Ukraine has been able to stop the Russian advances and in many cases reverse some of the early gains (Russian still holds significant gains along the Black Sea coast.
But as long as Russian supply continues and the war remains in Ukraine, they can continue to use...
Canada is in North America so we are Americans.
And I live in the USA and am a USA citizen as well.
I was born and raised in Quebec and went to university there but I am not French Canadian.

The bottom part is dumb. One of the fastest ways the war could end it that Ukraine surrenders.
I want Russia defeated, and them to surrender. If Ukraine decides to negotiate, I want it from the maximum position of strength that they can. I want Ukraine to defeat Russia quickly with the least...
Then read what I wrote.
I was pretty clear that I did not want the war to end that way, but that I want the war to instead end in the defeat of Russia.
I was discussing the argument and I want peace as fast as possible and obviously I do not want that as I do not want Ukraine to surrender.
Maybe English is not your first language?
