Is 43 dBA loud?

It depends upon where they take the measurement from, and I dont think there is a standard on this... my fan is rated at 43dba, but its a 60mm fan, and its f***ing loud. But I installed a homemade baybus, so I can switch between 7 and 12 volts, which makes it slightly more bearable for sleeping...

I favor FreeBSD as my OS of choice. The reasons for this are many, but basically what it comes down to is that it works and works well. The ports collection is great, and I love being able to use cvsup to make upgrading simple. Administration is mostly very intuitive... IMO, much more so than...

I give my vote to FreeBSD- Increadibly stable (a bsd trait in general) Huge number of ports available...and they work Great community support Very active (desktop) development - Good server side stuff too, but FreeBSD is my workstation, so this is the most important. Excellent hardware...

I'm running FreeBSD 4.5-stable and KDE3 on an Athlon 1.4@1.6 with 512MB 2100DDR and (while I'm usually a minimalist in my windowmanager selection), it's very pretty and works quite well. No lag whatsoever and great stability thus far... You can get packages for FreeBSD at http://freebsd.kde.org...

Is there an alternative OS?

i believe the mandrake utility is sndconfig...run this as root, it should be very simple. don't forget to do some post install security tweaking if u have a perminent internet connection.... -fish

Duron question............STRANGE things going on

from what I understand, the PIV is not all that impressive, not only does it get beat by slower TBirds, but it would actually be slower than a PIII clocked at the same speed. Go figure...

Any idea where to buy a 4 processor P-Pro board?

Thanks, that was pretty much my thought...maybe it will help to know that I use about 60MB while just surfing w/netscape w/Windows and my background processes.

Anyone Switch From A PIII@A Gig To A T-Bird???

Can't get multiplier to change

Actually, I have not noticed any difference when using other methods than the pencil trick, as the only time the L1 bridges are checked is during the boot-up. My guess is that there is a problem other than you chip, although 850 is the max for some of AMDs cpus. I would check for driver...

Rain has almost no effect on my Duron. Thermal pad is all mucked up

Are you running Windows 2000? If so, there is already an idle process, so RAIN won't make any difference. As for the Sandra thing, don't trust SAndra's temp readings, they are always way off. Go to Radio Shack and buy some thermal compound, use a razor to scrape off the thermal pad, and then...

Is Duron a Pentium Class CPU?

Not so sure about some of the statements being made here...yes a duron meets and exceeds the requirements of being a 'pentium class cpu' but lets not forget that Pentium CPUs didn't have MMX until the 166 or 200mhz days, so something like a P75 would not work ;) -Fish

Does Anyone Know if not having a fan on your cpu will cause they system to freeze up before it can boot

As a matter of fact, I know that Compaq shipped a lot of thier lower end K6-2 lines without fans, so it can be done. I'm not sure what kind of wattage a PIII 700 puts out, but a K6-2 400 is somewhere around 22W... -Fish

Lifespan of K6-2

Peltier + Duron

DAMNED BSOD with win2k bootup after duron 600 / a7v install....

Drak is right, Windows 2000 will not boot off of a hard disk that was setup using a different IDE controller and that is probably your problem. This CAN be overcome and I forget exactly how.... You must boot to the Win2k CD, then go as if you were going to reinstall, but you don't need to...

Yes, your p/s is rated higher than the peltier, but remember that there are other things drawing on that 12V rail...ie cpu, hard drive, fans, etc. IT is very possible that the combination is drawing too much current. IT is also possible that the peltier is meant for 14V or higher, meaning that...
