Rusin, On your original post you should change Memory clocks to Memory rate, because technically the clock is 1100 MHz but the rate is 2200 MHz.

Yes, the 8600gts was a disappointment ... but still, it's much faster than the 7900gtx in games like Crysis and CoD4. Geforce 7 was good for it's time, but it ages really badly compared to x1900. Basically when the 8600gts was released, it was designed as a card that would outperform the...

That would mean 4870x2 is only 30-40% faster than 4870, since a card that is 40% faster than the 9800GTX is already close to 9800GX2 performance. Also what benchmark are they using? Vantage?

ATI and nVIDIA do. Performance/watt is considered the best determination of how good the architecture is. That being said, I expect performance/watt for these new GPUs to be on par with the previous generation.

Poor nitro ... you're still confusing memory size with bandwidth. =) Under your analogy that the bus "carries" the book, the two students don't carry the same book; but they get the books from two identical libraries. In other words, library = 512 MB of memory, carrying book = 256 x 2 bit...

Actually, it's two copies of the same textbook. One student reads the first chapter while the second student reads the second chapter, and then they exchange ideas (framebuffer).

    nVidia GT200 Series Thread

The original argument was whether 9800GX2 has an effective 256 bit or 512 bit bus. It has an effective 512 bit bus. Bandwidth is a type of throughput, and so is processing power, which we are leaving out in this discussion. So fine, let's change it to so that it takes 10 seconds for the...

Nitro, the students solve different problems at the same time. Let's say a 256 bit student can solve 50 problems in ONE HOUR, and a 512 bit student can solve 100 problems in the same amount of time. If you have 2 256 bit students, then student A can solve the first 50 problems in one hour...

    nVidia GT200 Series Thread

Data is duplicated across all GPU memory in SLI. Each GPU is rendering something different, so they are accessing different regions of memory at the same time. Basically it would be two different 256 bit buses transferring different instances of the same data AT THE SAME TIME. It's like...

Where do you see the 8800GTX owning the GX2? Maybe in MSAA, but not CSAA, which is probably what most people will use.

    nVidia GT200 Series Thread

Data is duplicated, but data accesses aren't duplicated, so 9800GX2 is effectively 512 MB of memory with a 512 bit bus.

Just think of physics as another graphical option. When you set shader and object quality of a game from Medium to High, you increasing the amount of shader resources needed. How is physics any different?

NV CEO goes at it again

nRollo, you posted the financial results from fiscal 1Q 2008 ... which was actually in APRIL 2007 (check the date). Last quarter nVIDIA was about 7 cents short of expectations, due to decreasing margins.

That says very little about actual performance. "Processing units" or whatever you call them are not the only factor when it comes to performance. RV770 will probably do really well in 3dmark vantage, but when it comes to games it's unknown.

Actually the 8800gtx used at least as much power or more than the 7950gx2. But then again, it was faster.

The reason is GPUs are so much more than shaders, TMUs, ROPs and memory bandwidth. Increasing all the things doesn't help if utilization stays low. The GPU itself is like an OS kernel; it needs share the resources efficiently and prevent stalls. Things like thread scheduling, thread...

    ATI RV770 in May??!!!

Enough minor success to stay afloat? Actually nVidia flourished while ATI stagnated this period. Not in technology but in financial success. Even though ATI had the performance crown, they over-designed their chips and could not make enough money from them. While the x1950xtx was awesome...

    D10U-30 from nVidia

The flops per pixel in current games haven't reached a point where increasing SP power leads to noticeable performance gains. Current SP/TMU/ROP ratio is too slanted towards SP, but as expected, future games will require more and more SP power.

Current games aren't SP-limited at all.

    D10U-30 from nVidia

You can't calculate it that way. As an example, Nvidia SP could do 3 madds per clock while an ATI SP could do 2 madds per clock. To get the gflops numbers to make sense, Nvidia SP does 50% more instructions per clock.

My honest BFG 9800 GX2 review. No hype.

I think something is wrong if your 8800GT couldn't run Bioshock smoothly. My 8800GTS 320 ran it well at 1680x1050 DX10, with maximum quality settings. It was a bit too slow at 1920x1200 though.

    Upgrade from a 320mb 8800GTS?

Upgrading isn't really necessary unless you game at 19x12 or higher. And for 16x10 gaming, I really would stick to $300 and under solutions.

What would be a worthwhile upgrade to 8800 GTS320

I went from a GTS 320 to a GTS 512, and I also have a 24" monitor. To get you an idea of how big (or small) the upgrade is, drop your resolution from 19x12 to 16x10 (1680x1050). That's comparable to the difference between the two when the 320 isn't suffering from the lack of memory. In...

    9800 GTX OFFICIAL SPECS

9800GTX has 512 because it has a 256-bit memory bus. It's not intended to blow away the 8 series; the intention is to bring 8800gtx class performance to a much more affordable level. Think of the 9800gtx as the Geforce 2 Ti, while the GX2 as the Geforce 3 Ti. Yes the 8800GT and GTS 512 pretty...

    9800 GTX OFFICIAL SPECS

No, that's not the reason. Based on your logic, it was a mistake for G80 to be faster than the 7950GX2. Nvidia has stated, more than once, that a single GPU solution is preferable; the GX2 is really just a stop-gap solution.

    Who's got next?

Not really a fair statement since you have to factor in the money you spent on 2900xt. How much are you spending in all? The cost of your 2900xt, 2900pro, and 3870x2, minus what you get for selling your 2900pro. Even if throw the 2900pro completely out, the price gap between adding a 3870x2...

    tweaktown gx2 review

A business looks to make money, and putting out a product to "stomp them silly" isn't worth the hundreds of millions to develop if it won't increase profits signficantly. G92 and G94 are good competitive products that make Nvidia lots of money, and there is no need to release anything better...

    9800 series release dates

I don't know why everyone talks about single and multi-core, because a GPU itself can be thought of as multi-core. Larrabee is expected to be 8 - 16 simplified x86 cores, lacking out-of-order execution and optimized for ray-tracing. Dual GPU, not dual core

Firingsquad has benchmarks of Crossfire X ... 3-way SLI is still the fastest, and 3870x2 + 3870 is about equal to 8800GTS SLI.

    9800 GX2 Benchmark is out!

It was ran with 4xAA + 16xAF, which is why you actually see a difference between the three. The difference will actually be bigger in games that scale well, and higher resolutions. >30% faster than the Ultra is a reasonable expectation.
