windows 7 rtm issue on completing install

solved this a while back thought I would post the problem. It was a pci express firewire card (don't remember the brand), windows 7 would not install (or boot) with the card in, removed the card and everything went smoothly.

When will we see 3.5" SSD

ocz is supposedly working on a 3.5" one (that will be 2 of the 2.5's in raid 0), havent seen anything on it in a while but it was supposed to be out relatively soon with capacities up to 1tb (or something like that), I think it was called Colossus

Modelworks, changing the cables is not a bad idea (since I just grabbed 2 sata cables that were laying around when I added in the drives), I don't think its the problem but it is a possibility.

New Intel SSD drives are in!!!

Old Hippie, that's not bad (and for one drive it would be fine), what I like about the patriot ones are that they can both handle 2 drives at a time, so if I add another ssd (not likely for a while but...) than I can still use the same bay, while the ic dock or some of the regular 2.5 to 3.5...

SSD Implications without AHCI

I have to ask, what are you using your computer for that you felt an ssd would be the proper upgrade for something like that (also are you running an x2 or single core)? While I am very happy with my G2, and I think it may actualy have been a bigger performance increase for most day to day use...

I would suspect general availability sometime before windows 7 releases to retail (then maybe 1-2 weeks where availability is down, followed by availability again until the holiday buying season hits full gear). A lot of the buying now is people who wanted to buy at release but were stuck...

New to RAID

for 16 I would definitely go with raid 6, any good card that can handle raid 5 in hardware can do 6, and while it adds a little to the cost (1 less drives worth of capcity) and slows it down a little, it does add a level of safety as even with 5, with 16 drives there is a not insignificant...

OCZ Colossus?

as we get closer to release reviews will show up, I would assume that they will be the best drives available for sustained (should hit bottleneck because of sata 2 for read and write) but I wouldnt expect random to be much better then the vertex (it may approach the intel but I tend to doubt...

8GB DDR3 dimms are out now?

would be nice to see some enthusiast 4gig sticks soon (if 8gig server ones are out), have thought about going to 12, but going to 3*4 vs 2*6 would be better (not sure if I need/would get anything out of 18 at the moment but there are times when 6 is not enough)

TechNet Windows 7 current download - full version or RTM?

RTM is full version, release candidate is something else. Technet is for evaluation only (msdn is development work only) but for home use, it is unlikely that anyone would bother you, (now if you paid for 1 technet license and installed windows/office on a bunch of machines at a small business...

that setup should work but for real gaming at 1920x1080 on anything relatively recent the 4870 is borderline, unless you have to buy now I would wait till windows 7 is out, but then dx11 cards will be out (and prices on current cards will have dropped, especialy the 4870x2) also i5 will be more...

Oldjunior, that depends, would you reinstall vista (or xp) on the ssd now? Are you going to 7 when it releases or waiting?... 7 Definitely appears to be better with ssd's then other os's, but there are still benefits with vista or xp (however if you don't intend to reinstall while you wait...

Great deals on SSD?

ocz and one of the other indilinx using companies have firmware with trim out now, all other manufacturers using that controller should eventually support trim, not sure about any of the samsung based drives (including summit).

recommend a Raid 5 card

in that price range the hihgpoint 4320 is not bad (its performance is quite good, but its software and support are no where near as good as the equivalent adaptec or areca (but those cards are around $600+))

I am not 100% sure, but I would think it would work, just connecting it to a raid controller should not be an issue, having it as part of an array would be.

taltamir, as for likely to have catastrophic failure, while its still possible with an ssd its quite different then with harddrives (I would never recomend runing raid 0 for important data without nightly backup on traditional drives, on ssd it might be ok), basically because of how ssd's work...

TemjinGold, actually you are wrong about that, onboard can handle raid 0 fine (with significantly higher bandwidth then even a couple of ssd's can do), its raid5/6 where a dedicated card starts to make a major difference (as there are parity calculations required, while raid 0 is simple).

Howard, from what I have seen (though I could be wrong) it appears that if you want and ssd in the relatively near future (3-6 months) buy now, as prices may go up a little before they go back down (as cost per gb of good flash is too close to the cost of the drive so profits are low, so prices...

taltimar newegg has been saying that for a few weeks now. I want the 160 available (newegg, zipzoomfly, mwave, antonline through amazon is iffy (http://www.resellerratings.com..._Network_Technologies) used to have good ratings but 6 month ones are scary.

Some RAID and Backup questions

in terms of speed as Nothinman said with software raid 5 write speed will be slower (possibly significantly) reads will be faster then 1 drive you said raid and "Backup" important thing to remember is raid is not a backup (raid 5, 1, 6...) if a drive fails raid will save you, but if you...

tried unplugging the ggw-h20l and installing off a usb key, seems to be a similar issue, both cases it goes ok until one of the reboots after that it runs for a little then just halts, no error, no progress after waiting for hours.

Trying to install windows 7 (rtm, professional 64bit) on one of my machines (q6600, abit ip35-e, 4gigs ddr2 6400 ocz, seagate 7200.10 500gb, lg ggw-h20l). Machine is currently running vista 32 (no issues) on a 320gb wd drive, install seems to run fine until it hits "completing install"...

Great deals on SSD?

Mango1970, apex is actually similar to vertex (same controller slower flash) and faster then summit in random read/writes (slower for sustained), seems that for most users the summit is 3rd (behind intel (1st), vertex (2nd)), but its not a bad drive (and quite a bit faster then your core).

Cloning Windows 7 HDD to SSD, with alignment.

since windows 7 has imaging options built in, have you tried simply imaging it and restoring to the new drive, still waiting for intel to get their new ssds out before I install the rtm, so I am not sure if the built in imaging can handle restoring to a different sized drive but it might be...

Any body makes optical Drive which can read BD and HD

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16827136137 bit more expensive but it can also burn blurays so it might be worth it. I picked up 2 of these when they were around $250 and while i haven't actualy burned a bluray they have been usefull to play both hd-dvd's and blurays on my media...
