Anything such as converting a USB 1.0 to USB 2.0

USB 1.0 only provides 1Mbps or 120KBps. It is not until USB 1.1 for 12Mbps. It will take almost 10min to open a 30MB image file.

    FIREWIRE ODDITIES

Forgot to ask about the OS on your system. Is it possible that your system does not support partition larger than 120G? The drive itself could be a 180G one. You might want to try making two partitions on the drive -- each one is smaller than 120G. Or you might be able to download an updated...

Correct way to add an external USB hard drive into an Enclosure pls??

NO JUMPER CHANGE ARE NEEDED. I think now days all hard drives are auto-configured for master or slave by default jumper setting. For external enclosure it should be auto or master I think.

Correct way to add an external USB hard drive into an Enclosure pls??

I don't think you did anything wrong. But Partition Magic8 crapped on you. I have an identical WD 120G drive in an external enclosure. There are no jumpers needed. I formated it with NTFS and had no problem. I also use a DELL laptop -- latitude c840. Its USB ports are v1.1 ones that go up to...

Missing "My Documents" Icon from Desktop on Win 2000 machine

Not really! Because "My Documents" is a system short cut by itself. Actually I have found the cure for this. In Win2000 the option of showing "My Documents" icon is hiding inside of "Folder Option" dialog box. Somehow this option was cleared that made the icon to disappear. I rediscovered this...

Hi, All All of sudden "My Documents" icon disappeared from my desktop on a Win 2000 Pro machine. Even though the short cut is still there under "Desktop" folder in Explorer but it just wouldn't show the icon on the desktop. I could not find any reference to this issue on Microsoft site. There...

Question about new AT&T cable service

Actually it is that the MAC address of your cable modem matters. I don't think AT&T is checking NIC's MAC address because firstly I have never given them MAC address information; secondly I am using a router with MAC clone feature and have changed router MAC address several times.

wouldn't it be possible to cool your computer the way the ac in your car works???

It wouldn't be easy. Firstly those small freezers or refrigerators are not powerful enough to cool a computer and I have not seen one small one uses frost-free technology. Secondly it would be very difficult to make everything air tight after drilling holes everywhere.

wouldn't it be possible to cool your computer the way the ac in your car works???

Most of these designs have been focusing on cooling the processor. My question is why not cool everything except drives with opennings? The case should be easier to build. But it will use more power, as much as a 25'cu freezer.

wouldn't it be possible to cool your computer the way the ac in your car works???

If I have the resources, I would build a computer case like a refrigerator(or freezer?) and floppy, CD Rom, etc. drives with opennings will be mounted on the refrigerator doors and insulated from the other parts. All external wires can go through a rubber sealed hole on the side. Since...

Can someone explain to me why IRQ's are so frustrating and limiting?

Since IRQ stands for I/O Request Queue, a single Queue should be enough for a single CPU machine if (and only if) I/O requests are handled fast enough. The reason that PC desing provides multiple queues is that some low priority I/O requests are not being handled fast enough. So a higher...

    USB-RJ45, will this work

You need a USB based printer server. I've not seen one yet. But you can get a simplest parallel to 10B/T printer server for $41 as you can find from price watch. Does your HP PhotoSmart printer have a parallel port also?

Best Price Performance Dual CPU / Mobo combo?!!

ECS Board is a very good option -- one ECS raid + 2 PIII 1GHz costs about $500 now. If Asus board comes out at $250 - $300 range, then I might use it with two Athlon 1GHz (non-MP version) for about the same price. According to Tom's article those non-MP Athlons are fully capable of running in...

    Half-duplex vs Full-duplex

Half-duplex means the NIC can either "send" or "receive" signals at any moment but not both. A full-duplex NIC can "send" and "receive" signals at same time.

    Isn't 10MBytes per minute a bit slow for a 10MBiT LAN?

This is a bit too slow. In normal conditions it should take about 3 minutes instead. A 10Mbit network usually provides a throughput about 3-5Mbit. That translates to 400-600kbyte/sec transfer speed. You can go to www.speedguid.net for turnup instructions.

    Help networking win2k and win98se

Two possibilities: One is that you don't have anything shared from Win98SE machine; Second is that you somehow disabled "NetBOIS over TCP/IP" on Win2K and Win98SE has NetBEUI protocol installed. So share something from Win98SE and enable "NetBIOS over TCP/IP" on Win2K.

VPN client configuration on W2K Question

Actually it is not a split tunnelling thing, Shadow. It is a simply routing table fix. On a Win2k machine you can check the routing table difference by using command "Route print" under different settings. You know that TCP/IP traffic goes out according to the routing table. In this...

I would say that TCP/IP performance is just as good as NetBEUI. Only reason that you might need NetBEUI is that some old applications do not support TCP/IP.
