Old age is making me a bit feeble minded ! I forgot to mention that I installed windows 2000 in a computer that has been running windows 2000 with all the screen options. That installation was made with this same installation disc - this clears the computer. So I guess my Question boils...

Windows 2000 restricted to 800x600.

I'm dual booting windows 2000 with linux ubuntu. In linux I have all options, but in windows I only have 640x480 and 800x600. Running windows alone is also restricted to those 2 options. Is there someplace in the program that can be modified? Or is this a defect in my installation disc ?

If you flash the BIOS, does that clear anything that was in before the flash ?

Cheesehead - I should have added - Video and sound are both fine with cable input to the PVR card thru the RF connector.

I am using the RF connectors on both the VCR and the TV card. The RF connector carries both video and sound. And, the TV card is connected to the sound card. The video is fine, and sound should be there,but it's not. Video quality is not the problem right now. Thanks for responding -...

Thanks for the comments guys. Biding on the ebay unit was stopped. But from the part # I found a new unit on sale at meritline.com (P/N sw-9574-c) for $135.00 . I'ts for a pc, but if a stand alone isn't available it will do. I knew I could rely on the anandtech group ! Thanks loads...

Old Compaq and DSL

To jadinolf: I'm W2GPB an old old timer 73. To Lemonlaw: This is the first time i've looked in a Compaq. The memory is under the Power supply and the case for the floppy. They would have to be removed to get at the memory - at least for this not too...

Thanks again guys - you helped me make the decision that an old 85er has trouble making. My decision : 1.- since 2k is loaded and usb is there that's frst 2. if too slow i'll replace 2k with 98 3.- look for isa NIC card or external modem. Thanks loads - you guys are great

Thanks for the comments guys. Would it make sense to replace W2000 with W98. Since she will never add any new software, and only uses the computer for email. W98 would also satisfy Verizon specs. There are 2 isa slots - no pci - one has an old modem that's not working. no NIC cards...

Saving streaming video

Anybody have recommendations for PCI WirelessG Adapters?

I just bought the EDIMAX EW-7128g from Newegg for $29 _ I think. It installed easily and works great. Good signal from a D-LINK router. Oh -it has a separate antenna.

NetZero logon thru DSL modem?

I guess you guys are right - I'm keeping DSL. You can hardly buy a decent bottle of Scotch for $30 anymore! I remember $30 in the 30's - that was a lot of money! Thanks for the help guys

Thanks for the comments guys. I do have a DSL account, and I oppened a NetZero account to check it out. I'm an old guy that now only checks to see if I have an email from one of my grandchildren. $30 a month for DSL seems much for that! When I was more active on the net it was fine...

I'm trying to check out NetZero, but I'm not ready to give up DSL. The logon goes thru the motions of dialing and checking, but never logs on. I'm using W2000, could it be the w2k dialing procedure? Thanks guys.

EXPERIENCED RIG BUILDER STUMPED!! PLEASE HELP ME!

The female connectors of the power supply cable are 2 semi circles. With a long nose plier, reach in to each and pinch them close together so they make good contact with the male pins. I've had 2 psu's yhat were fixed this way. Good luck

Thanks drag. Norton is being used. One new condition. When Norton is removed from a computer, the problem goes away! It seems Norton is looking for something but can't find it. Any new thoughts?

In a LAN of 10 computers running w98 or w2k, opening programs has suddenly slowed significantly. The older computers take about 2 minutes to open a word program. The newer computers take about 30 seconds. When left button clicking "Start", the program list comes up immediatly, when right button...

ARGHH!! What can cause PC to reboot on its own?

Unplug your power supply cable, and with a needle nose pliers pinch the terminals to make sure they are making good contact with the pins on the motherboard. I had a problem like that , it turned out to be the restart terminal making intermitent contact. Hope this works for you.

Why can't I see all W2K directories in DOS

"dir /a" did it. I could see and copy all directories and files. I must go back and re-read Peter Norton's DOS 6 book. Thanks stevewm and all.

Computer turns on/off by itself

Check the reset terminal on the power cable. Make sure the 2 halves are not spread too far apart. I had the same problem. I pinched the 2 halves closer together and it cleared the problem
