    Lowest power commodity computer

The oldschool notebook probably isn't a good idea, even if we didn't need the PCI cards - I dont know of any notebooks that have AC-back functionality. Cheers

    Lowest power commodity computer

Good stuff - i'll investigate the C7's. I've heard of them in the past however I recall the first gen (733 & 800MHz???) were slower than a cel300 (the non-"a" model, without any L2 cache) in many tasks. I'm hoping they've improved since, and retain the ultra low power consumption. Will report...

    Lowest power commodity computer

Oh, the 2Gb idea came from the intention to use a RAM drive to save data to, thereby reducing physical drive access. When a stick of DDR2 2Gb is dirt cheap and the power penalty is perhaps 1 watt, I thought that would be more justified. I'm completely open to ideas, that's why I'm asking.

    Lowest power commodity computer

The site has a 600w inverter, connected to a large lead acid battery bank which retains (from memory - only been there once) about 200 amp-hours of reserve. The datalogging software is not the best I've seen. It writes about a meg per minute of raw data. It's currently in an old P3 system -...

    Lowest power commodity computer

I'm told these PCI cards only have Windows 2000 or XP drivers- so 512Mb is minimum. Solid state drives being slow? Last I checked the bigger ones were reasonably fast, not the same performance as maximum sequential write speed of most 7200RPM drives however close to. They benefit from not...

    Lowest power commodity computer

A few other points I forgot to mention There will be regular power outages, it needs to have the ability to turn itself back on without user intervention. Most boards have the option in BIOS however this is a deal-breaker, if it doesn't support AC-back functionality then it's not suitable...

    Intel G35 vs G33

I need a motherboard to support 8Gb of RAM and a Q9450, or preferably a Xeon X3350 since they're practically identical however I'd suspect the Xeon is a more validated product and the price is very similar. I dont game so 3D graphics isn't a priority, onboard video and sound is preferable...

    Intel 3495ABG & dlink super-G mode

Yeah, I was fairly certain that would be the answer, Intel doesn't like to bend the rules to increase home performance by cheating with multiple channels.... Guess I gotta stick with the boring 2mb/sec speeds..... ah heck eh. Cheers mate

    Intel 3495ABG & dlink super-G mode

I'm after more throughput on my WLAN, have a D-Link DWL2100 AP and a laptop with the Intel 3495ABG card. I reckon I'm SOL since the laptop doesn't use a compatible chipset but hoping someone may know if it can or can't be done Cheers

    Hardware RAID disk signatures

How does a brand new controller know an array exists that was created from two HDDs on a different controller altogether?
  15. B

    Hardware RAID disk signatures

As per title, how do hardware controllers know which disk is which? I suspect they write a signature somewhere on the disk that they dont make available to the OS or user, is there any more in-depth info about it or if its done another way, how its done? Cheers

Cloning a working WinXP partiton onto a logical RAID-1 drive?

Nope. Got new problems now. You build a new RAID-1 array in the card's BIOS and select a source drive for the data. Takes a few hours. Had a problem then the system wouldn't boot. I unplugged the drive from the controller and plugged it into the motherboards SATA port. It booted fine. I...

Cloning a working WinXP partiton onto a logical RAID-1 drive?

Had a working RAID-1 array. One drive failed and the RAID array went into a degraded state. Got two new drives, fitted and tested. Now I can recreate the RAID array using the BIOS utility or using the Adaptec Storage Manager Browser edition software, thats no worries. What I can't seem to do...

need to format FAT32 greater than 32Gb in WinXP, how?

Can you suggest a 3rd party tool to do the job? I need a FAT32 partition since Symantec Ghost works in DOS mode and I need to do a lot of back and forth imaging and testing. I also need to regularly create/delete FAT32 partitions so a quick format would be great. I might end up creating a...

need vbscript code to choose a random file in a directory

    Reducing disk activity in winXP

Thanks for the idea of tweakUI. I'll download that and see what it can do. Windows Update, AV, Sysrestore etc are NOT affecting the disk, it only spins up when a new file needs loading that isn't cached in RAM or it needs to write to the HD. The two offenders are listed in my second post...
