The oldschool notebook probably isn't a good idea, even if we didn't need the PCI cards - I dont know of any notebooks that have AC-back functionality. Cheers

Good stuff - i'll investigate the C7's. I've heard of them in the past however I recall the first gen (733 & 800MHz???) were slower than a cel300 (the non-"a" model, without any L2 cache) in many tasks. I'm hoping they've improved since, and retain the ultra low power consumption. Will report...

Oh, the 2Gb idea came from the intention to use a RAM drive to save data to, thereby reducing physical drive access. When a stick of DDR2 2Gb is dirt cheap and the power penalty is perhaps 1 watt, I thought that would be more justified. I'm completely open to ideas, that's why I'm asking.

A few other points I forgot to mention There will be regular power outages, it needs to have the ability to turn itself back on without user intervention. Most boards have the option in BIOS however this is a deal-breaker, if it doesn't support AC-back functionality then it's not suitable...

I need a motherboard to support 8Gb of RAM and a Q9450, or preferably a Xeon X3350 since they're practically identical however I'd suspect the Xeon is a more validated product and the price is very similar. I dont game so 3D graphics isn't a priority, onboard video and sound is preferable...

As per title, how do hardware controllers know which disk is which? I suspect they write a signature somewhere on the disk that they dont make available to the OS or user, is there any more in-depth info about it or if its done another way, how its done? Cheers

Thanks for the idea of tweakUI. I'll download that and see what it can do. Windows Update, AV, Sysrestore etc are NOT affecting the disk, it only spins up when a new file needs loading that isn't cached in RAM or it needs to write to the HD. The two offenders are listed in my second post...

I had a similar problem once, check the UNC **VERY** carefully. The mistake I was making was something like: xcopy /c /h /e /d /y g:\dirname\*.* \\server01 I've also had the error when calling a vbscript file with a mistyped name like above. Dont know if it will help your situation...

I have a need for FAT32 for DOS compatibility and need to regularly delete/create a partition of a certain size, format it FAT32 in windows Trouble is it wont let me make a partition larger than 30-ish gig. Any cheats around this?
