    Thinking of trying out Linux...

Not exactly scientific, but my Asus P3V4X was probably the most stable mobo I've ever owned (I gave it to my brother a year ago after I ran it for a couple of years; also built a machine for my mom with the same model) and it was VIA-based. The machine I'm typing this from is also a VIA-based...

    deleting a linux kernel

And, as always, make a backup of your lilo.conf file (or any file) before you modify it. As an aside, Cain, I'm glad to see you were able to get your knoppix hdinstall working; was it the swap partition size problem I mentioned or something else that fixed your problem?

    Thinking of trying out Linux...

Before you go out and buy a mobo, check the hardware compatibility listings for Mandrake, or if you're going to use another distro try Here. Not everything that's supported is on the lists, but they're pretty thorough. I've had good luck with Mandrake and noobs, so I would recommend it for...

    knoppix 3.7 HD-install?

I ran into a problem like that with a hd-install of Knoppix a while back...it wouldn't let me install if the swap partition was over a certain size (I think it was at about 1 gig).

Microsoft Security Bulletin for - get this - Wordpad

Just helped out a coworker with his home machine, and the new update caught my eye...my first reaction was "how bad can it be...it's frigging Wordpad!" Turns out that the update is for a remote code execution vulnerability in Wordpad. WORDPAD!! Oh, well. Install the update and move on, I...

What's the longest you've gone on a machine w/out reinstalling the OS?

I've got an old machine running Debian stable that I've been using as a DNS and DHCP server (used to use it as a login authentication server and file server until the client's environment grew beyond what the poor thing could handle) that's been around for about three and a half years. Come to...

Has anyone here taken the linux+ certification exam?

Just curious whether anyone has taken it, and if so, what did you think? I'm considering getting the cert for a little extra resume padding.

    fedora vs mandrake

Of course, with urpmi (and Easy URPMI ), you don't really need yum and apt for Mandrake. Mandrake's control center seems to be more "all encompassing" than Fedora's tools, as well. Really the choice for a lot of users seems to come down to whether they prefer Gnome or KDE. Fedora is pretty...

Just got my SuSE 9.2 Pro box!

It detected all my hardware and configured it properly...looks like blowfish is the default password encryption this time around (that's a good thing, considering that you manually had to set it that way before - I always got the little error that my root password was too long for the encryption...

    vbscript syntax problem

Hello all, I'm attempting to invent a workaround (or as I like to call them, reacharounds) for a problem my compadres in my company created. I've written a vbscript that does everthing I need it to do except for one thing: write a specific bunch of text to a file the script has created. The...

French Ministry of Equipment moving to Linux

I like the fact that companies and government agencies are looking into alternatives to Microsoft products. No matter which way they decide to go in the end, at least they are beginning to realize that other products exist and are (at least on the surface) examining their viability...

    Filesystem Benchmark

I've never lost any data using ReiserFS (although I don't use Reiser anymore because I heard a couple of horror stories). XFS seems to have some of the best recovery tools and it seems faster than EXT3, so that's what I use these days.

    thinking of installing Mandrake Linux

Mandrake 10 Official (not Community) is actually pretty nice. Most SATA controllers work out of the box; my board here is an Asus P4P800 and everything works flawlessly. Resizing NTFS partitions does still work, but of course I recommend backing up any data before doing it just in case. I try...

A plethora of Mandrake questions, should be easy for reg users

Linux isn't really susceptible to viruses (except for a couple) or spyware. With that said, you should use a firewall to limit hackers' access to your system; Mandrake makes it really easy: open the Mandrake control center, go to Security, click on Firewall, and uncheck the top box...that will...

Linux Distro (I know, I know...)

If you really want to get away from the RedHat paradigm, then give Slackware a try (you might want to check out Dropline Gnome on Slack if you're used to Gnome). It even breaks away from the SystemV-style init scripts.

    Which Linux Distro/Version for 233mhz P1, ~2GB HD, 48k ram?

I'd say Debian or Slackware with something that old. I agree with Sunner about using a lightweight WM on a box like that...if you want something relatively light but still a bit Windows-ish, you could go with IceWM; I think personally I would use fluxbox or blackbox (but hey, I use those on my...

how can i get around this stupid IT policy?

There has been a policy like this one at every company I have worked for. The lockout policy is a good policy, since most users do not lock their machines when they go to lunch/home, etc. The restriction of the type of screensaver you can run is also (for the most part) a good thing, because...
