And, as always, make a backup of your lilo.conf file (or any file) before you modify it. As an aside, Cain, I'm glad to see you were able to get your knoppix hdinstall working; was it the swap partition size problem I mentioned or something else that fixed your problem?

Before you go out and buy a mobo, check the hardware compatibility listings for Mandrake, or if you're going to use another distro try Here. Not everything that's supported is on the lists, but they're pretty thorough. I've had good luck with Mandrake and noobs, so I would recommend it for...

knoppix 3.7 HD-install?

I ran into a problem like that with a hd-install of Knoppix a while back...it wouldn't let me install if the swap partition was over a certain size (I think it was at about 1 gig).

fedora vs mandrake

It detected all my hardware and configured it properly...looks like blowfish is the default password encryption this time around (that's a good thing, considering that you manually had to set it that way before - I always got the little error that my root password was too long for the encryption...

Filesystem Benchmark

I've never lost any data using ReiserFS (although I don't use Reiser anymore because I heard a couple of horror stories). XFS seems to have some of the best recovery tools and it seems faster than EXT3, so that's what I use these days.

If you really want to get away from the RedHat paradigm, then give Slackware a try (you might want to check out Dropline Gnome on Slack if you're used to Gnome). It even breaks away from the SystemV-style init scripts.
