Need some advice on older ultralight single-spindle notebook

Mini PCI 802.11G WiFi Card + Toshiba 2430-S255

Do not use any Intel WI-FI cards. I remember I was not able to get them to work in the 1135 and I pretty sure they would not work in the 2435. You will not have any problems with Agere cards and Atheros cards should work fine as well. Make sure you are at the most recent BIOS, 1.7 I think.

I want a Tablet PC, any recommendations?

I have found Acer's C series to be nice units. Only a 10" LCD, but that makes them light and easy to hold when using them in tablet mode.

Laptop freeze when installing Windows with AC power adapter...

Upgrade the BIOS to the latest version, it solves thermal issues. Also make sure blow out both fans on the laptop to make sure they are spinning correctly.

Are laptop cdrw drives generally interchangeable except for the brackets?

You also have to pay attention the configuration of the drive, whether it is a M/S (master/slave) or CSEL (cable select). The IBM should be expecting a CSEL drive, though I think you will only lose the ability to boot to the drive if you put in a M/S (a lot of M/S laptops will not see a CSEL...

Cleaning Laptop Keyboards

My aunt claimed she could usually get about 3 cleanings with using rubbing alcohol before the kybd would stop working all together. Other than running a non-working kybd under hot water for about 5 minutes (still didn't work) I have not tried to clean a kybd.

I beleive manufacturers are required by law to keep parts in stock for 3 years. I can still get parts for laptops that are 8 years old from Toshiba.

Faster Processor or Hard Drive?

Keep in mind it will be hard to upgrade the processor in the future, but HDD upgrades are easy. Of course if you think you will need those extra 20GB then the choice is easy.

Go ahead and do it. The 14" and 15" models both use the same system board. Just make sure that you are buying the whole LCD assembly and not just the LCD panel/module. The 15" LCD will obviously not fit into the assembly for the 14". Also, there is no UXGA LCD for the 800, only a SXGA+...

I can't remember, what color is the case? It is a silver gray right? That unit is very similar to the 520 series so you could look for a drive from one of those units. Of course the drive uses a standard sized bezel so you can put any drive you wish in there, though the color may not match...

Odds of getting other keyboard to fit onto this centrino barebone notebook?

Find me a better picture. Spec-wise, it sure sounds similar to the Acer Travelmate 800 (made by Inventec I believe). The cables on those keyboards are near impossible to alter. If the cable doesn't come out of the kybd in line with the connector then you probably will not be able to get it in...

There are no jumpers on that board, or any Toshiba board for that matter, and he is already using the latest BIOS. I am currently waiting for a 1415 or 2415 to come into the shop so I can test with my 2.2GHz. Stay tuned.

Can a software install power down notebook?

If software is shutting it down then you should see the laptop go through a shutdown process. If it is shutting down all of a sudden, then it may be due to overheating. Use compressed air and blow out the fans. Check HP's site for BIOS updates.
