Win XP Dual Boot with Win98 questions (I don't get it)

Hey peoples. I read the FAQ, but the big words just killed me. I'm a well knowledged user with computers, however I lack in the knowledge of Win NT/2000/XP versions. I have games that I actually NEED to have working, but will not work properly with Windows XP, so I want to dual boot...

Will my burner overburn and whats the best program to do it with?

I dont' think a lower speed would help any, but if it does set it to 4x. I have a 10X myself and I only record at 4x just cuz I hate losing perfectly good CD-Rs to buffer problems and things that sometimes arrive (as I'm a pathetic Win98 user). I think you'll be just fine burning the 702mb...

Will my burner overburn and whats the best program to do it with?

I use Roxio Easy CD Creator 5.0 It's an excellent program, but when it comes to burner software, nothing expensive or fancy is really necessary in my opinion. All it needs to do is put the darn info on the CD! ;) Bill Martin

Just got DSL!

The DSL we have in our area isn't true DSL, however they advertise it as that. I've heard nothing but bad bad things from everyone who gets DSL in my local town. However, our cable access from Charter Communications is excellent. A hefty price at 45 per month plus 10 for modem rental, but...

My guess would only be to go to the site of the owners of the STB name. Try Nvidia.com and look up drivers there.

What is a good upgradeable AMD board?

I've found the Abit KT7A to fit every need of mine, I'm running a 1100mhz T-Bird on it. Abit makes excellent boards, I'm very happy with my choosing them.

Are SCSI harddrives more reliable than IDE ?

They've always been more reliable, my friends swear to them and hate using anything else. I on the other hand like to have money in my pocket after buying or putting a computer together so I've used IDE for a long time. SCSI is faster and more reliable but IDE is still an excellent direction...

Poll: Are you AMD/Intel/Cyrix man?

The first computer I built came with a Cyrix with the motherboard. Needless to say I hated the thing, so I replaced it with an AMD K6 300mhz chip. Ever since owning that chip I've been with AMD all the way. I have no plans on going back to Intel. Bill M.

Anyone used an ORB Drive?

I opted to go with a burner for storing my data. That'd be my suggestion, but then again I can be clumsy so the thought of having a sensitive product is something I like to steer clear of. I'd go with the burner Bill

Replacing a motherboard

I'd say just get a new motherboard. It's not really necessary to have the exact same one. You can install all your other products on a new board so you really shouldn't have anything to worry about granted you're willing to stick the money into a new motherboard if that time comes. Bill

Are these temperatures right for my Athlon???

Well, they seem high to me, but I'm very picky when it comes to the temp in my computer. For me my 1.2gig Athlon (T-Bird) is running at 32 degrees Celcius. For me my warnings are set (by factory default) that 50 degrees celcius is the warning of overheating for the CPU My system overheat is...

Is my Voodoo3 2000 AGP dragging down my systems performance?

I dont' know about your board specifically but I made the switch from a VooDoo3 to a GeForce2 and noticed a difference in regular application use. I'd say go for the GeForce2 card. Bill Martin

Case fan not spinning

Well, case fans are cheap. I'd say just purchase a new one. Sounds like it might just be screwed up. In the meantime if it's a problem that it's not turning just take the casing off to keep cool air moving to the system. Bill Martin

What's a safe CPU temperature?

I like to keep my T-Bird chip no higher than 40 degrees celcius, but currently mine runs at about 32 degrees celcius. It doesn't cost much to keep the temperature low, so I just let my overactive concience take over on the situation :) Bill

CD Roms- which to buy?

Is onboard sound really that bad??

Onboard sound has a tendancy to skip, miss, jolt, pop, crank, twirl, do the polka. It's pretty iffy, I mean the faster your processor the better it plays, but overall it's just not worth it or even necessary. Not necessary because you can get a cheap sound card which will by FAR beat it in...

Thoughts on HW prob...

could be a short in the MB could be the powersupply. Here's a little suggestion, maybe this will shine some light. Try a different connector into the Hard Drive concerning Power to the hard drive. Maybe the power coming out of the PS is bad on that line. Ya never know I guess. If it's not...

Would a new cable modem improve speeds?

You could but cable modems are quite expensive. For me it would cost 200 bucks to buy one, and if a new one comes out, well then, I'd be screwed. But renting I don't have to pay that hefty 200 dollars and secondly if a new modem comes out, I get it thru the company. Your call on that account...

Why do I max out at 45,333 bps dial-up speed?

Are you on Windows98? I've noticed that back when I used a modem it always maxed out at that as well. But upon tests, pings, download speeds and other such tests I've found out: That's not the max out. You are most likely still getting 5.3K per sec. The only other thing I can say is it might...
