Switching Domain to WorkGroups?

NetSwitcher is a shareware program for Windows that saves all of you network and printer settings as profiles. You can switch back and forth between work and home networks simply by selecting a different profile.

router, switch, hub???

Assuming the workstations use the router as the gateway, you don't even need a server. The server is only necessary if you are setting up a network domain.

Slow LAN throughput

For what it's worth: Moving files between my WinNT4 server and Win98SE workstation via 10/100Mbps NIC's, Cat5 cable and Netgear FS105 fast ethernet switch I max out at about 21.6Mbps.

That sucks when they don't include at least the OEM Windows CD and CoA. Unfortunately, I think that ICS is the only part of the SE upgade that is not available as a download (either with IE5 or a Service Pack) from Microsoft. I believe that the cheapest alternative is to buy an upgrade CD. I...

I have Win98SE on one of my boxes. ICS is listed under Add/Remove Programs --> Windows Setup --> Intenet Tools.

DSL SHARING QUESTION

I haven't run into a DSL ISP yet, and I've had three, that will provide support for a non-provided modem. So you'd be on your own for support. There is a pretty lively trade in DSL modems on eBay, but I think it is mostly people picking up used models of the same hardware their ISP sells.

How do I get rid of password request from win2k box?

Umm. In order to access the Win2K box you need to have access priviledges. This is one reason NT/2K is better than 9x. The smart thing to do is create new shares for the drives or folders you want to share. Then manage the access priviledges for the shares. Don't just share out the whole box...

Athlex -- excellent nutshell definitions. Heat23 -- the optimal setup for a small home network sharing a DSL/Cable connection would be to have your modem connect to a router, effectively shielding your network from the Internet. The router would be the only box with an IP address accessible...

For starters we need to know what operating systems are on each box, and how you connect to the Internet. Also: What are your network settings on each box -- no need to tell us your IP address assigned by your ISP if it is static, just the rest.

Connecting a Router and a Hub

Generally speaking the uplink port on the router should connect to your modem - and it may have a switch for toggling back and forth from straight-through to crossover. All hubs and PC's should connect to the regular ports on the router.

If you go with randal's advice be sure to change your Subnet Mask accordingly: 255.0.0.0 and 255.255.0.0 respectively.

Does anyone have a Klinux compatable network card to sell me?

Have you tried the diagnostics utility on the EtherDisk? It can tell you for sure if the card is the problem. Sometimes just changing ISA slots makes a difference with 3C509's. Don't abandon it until you run the tests. Those cards are pretty solid. /edit: the diag utility is on disk 2. Also -...
