It's because iPod works as an external harddrive on a Mac. Plus it can work as a semi-PDA by importing all your iCal's calender info + address book.

those CDs have been free since the first day they came out, but it requires the OSX (version 10.0.4) to be installed on any mac, however, there is..um..um...to ..um um..it to install it :P
