good athlon xp sdram and ddr mobo

the ecs k7s5a has 2 ddr and 2 sdr slots make sure to get a good psu to go with it as it can be a bit picky about power throw in a duron or low end axp and it'll make a nice stable little system

Raid 5 questions

as far as i know raid 5 is only supported by hardware controllers, as calculating the parity bit would eat a bunch of cpu cycles read through the AT ide raid guide, its a bit dated now, but the majority of the info should still be applicable

well..got my dvi to crt adapter today...no problems attaching it and visual quality is great as for using two cards for dual displays, i used to use an old s3 vision 864 pci card to run a second display and had no problems running it with an agp card just had to set the bios to initialize the...

colorcase.com has them for $9.99 i ordered one for my ti4200, but had to have it shipped to my house not my dorm, so i'm waiting for the package from my parents to show up i'll update tommorrow to say if it sucks or rocks

celeron 1ghz smp capable? what mobo?

p3 tualatins are smp locked you have to get the p3s tualatins with 512k L2 cache i'm pretty sure only the dual capable ones have 512k L2 so all coppermine p3s are dual capable, p3 tualatins must be the dual capable high cache variant

Cheap Case Suppliers

Compgeeks has some really cheap cases usually (sometimes sub $20) and shipping isn't that bad their selection varies from time to time, but there's one cheap case they always seem to have you'll probably want to replace the psu in it (unfortunatley they stopped selling it without the psu)...

that's why i use the lighter fluid, cuts right through the thermal pad though i find the unused pads on new hsf's almost as annoying

HT on a p4 2.8?

buick beast- you can't use a single xeon in a p4 mobo, it uses a different socket on a side note, the aero eng department here at iowa state has a nice new lab of dual ht xeon dell workstations w/ 2 gigs ram each and either128 or 256 meg graphics cards (can't remember which specific card)...

how to remove thermal paste?

isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol is good zippo ligther fluid (naptha) cuts through the goo quicker, then rinse off with isopropyl alcohol it can be a pain to get rid of thermal pads with just the alcohol, so i reccomend using lighter fluid first then a quick wipe off with alcohol $2 for the lighter...

If a heat sink fan quits will the heat sink alone be enough to save the processor?

i had a fan die on my tbird 1.4, but my sk-6 saved it i did have thermal shut down set in the bios at around 60-70

Do any motherboards support SD ram anymore?

ecs k7s5a($50), a duron or axp 1600+(~$40-50) and a new psu($30-40) the k7s5a supports sdr or ddr, so you could upgrade to ddr later, and also go to a faster axp (up to 2600+ (original 133 fsb version))

what exactly do you mean by 50% overhead windogg? that you get 50% usable space from the harddrives? or do you mean i/o performance? a 0+1 array on a 4 channel onboard raid should be just about as fast as a straight raid 0 as far as only getting 50% of the capacity...that's the price of the...

Is It Still Possible to Get 1.4 GHz Athlon @ 200FSB?

i built a duron/ecs combo for my parents reusing the crappy pc100 ram from their k6-2 system, rock solid system power supply seems to be the main source of problems, i bought a nice new psu for that system and have ahd 0 problems with it

if you decide you'll be willing to do tech support yourself consider: ecs k7s5a antec 300-350 watt psu duron >= 1Ghz decent but quiet hsf 256 mb pc2100 or pc133 depending on budget liteon burner whatever vid card you want...tv out is a nice option if you're parents don't have a stand alone dvd...

you could probably go to a raid 0+1 cheaper than buying a good raid 5 card, raid 5 would give you 3 hdds with the capcaity of 2, 0+1 would give 4 hdds with capacity of 2 but fully mirrored so basically it comes down to which costs more, a new raid card or another hdd for 0+1 to work most...

1.4s are unlocked,so if you're board can do the 14x multiplier a 266 tbird 1.4 should be workable edit: but you should move up to a newer motherboard if you're wiulling to consider that, ecsk7s5a for around 50, axp 1600+ for around $50, new brandname 300-350 watt psu for $30-40,could even keep...

if its an atx board and an atx case you should be fine, the backplate should come with the mobo or if necessary just run without one, not a major deal if its an at case (ooooold) you'll likely have to dremel up the back of the case for it to fit, probably more so than its worth if its a new case...

AMD to outsource products, lay-off people.

its a poor economy and they're in a down point in their product cycle, gotta do what you gotta do the outsourcing has been in the works for quite awhile iirc, and really, when things get better it would be nice for amd to devote more of their overall resources to r&d and less to fab infrastructure

Problem setting up a RAID 0 array on a EPOX 8K3A+ HELP

i'd reccomend not raid 0ing those hdds from what i;ve read wd se drives perform better as single drives than in a raid 0 not sure what the problem is thats causing install to fail

Disabling RAID on Epox 8k5a2+ for HD's

try plugging your boot hdd into the primary non raid port, set boot order in bios to boot from hdd0 first, plug other hdd into secondary ide, cdrw into one raid slot, dvd into other raid slot i ran like this for awhile before i jumped into raid 0,worked fine

got a free 166mhz alpha box...what os to run?

ok...its a socket 278 21066, isa 3com nic, main chip on the vidcard says wdc,its isa, looks like about 1meg vidram..most interesting thing about the vidcard is the set of 5 dipswitches below the vga port 3x (32bit 33 mhz it appears) pci, 5xisa, 2xps2..looks like there are headers for com and...

what soundcard and mobo are you running? my sblive on epox 8k3a+(via kt333) sometimes stutters during heavy cd access, so it could be a sound blaster problem actually,just go ahead and post full system specs and it should be easier to pick out the trouble spot
