War of the Worlds: The Attack (2/10) I don't know what I was thinking. I saw a clip of it in a trailer for upcoming sci-fi movies and added it to my list without any research, other than, "Oh - I like WotW, so let's see what this one brings." I recall the clip almost reminding me of "Attack...

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017) - 4/10 Eh.. it was sci-fi. I enjoyed (both) openings of the movie (I'm a sucker for Bowie's Space Oddity.) But after that.. ugh. I mean, it had .. characters. And dialogue. And Cara Delevingne is cute. Beyond that.. I don't know what the...

Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar was enjoyable. Ridiculous, but enjoyable. I do like Kristen Wiig, though.

The Matrix: Resurrections (6.5/10) Just a movie that really didn't need to be made. Was a bit fun, though. They tried to recapture the feel of the first movie, and somewhat succeeded. The self-references went on a little long, though.

Cosmic Sin - / 10 Watched this Bruce Willis trash on a flight to LA last Friday. Decent production, but no plot, script, tension, acting skills, protagonists, antagonists, or uhh.. craft services, I assume. Skip it and just rewatch The Avengers. Or just stare out the window for...

The audio was perfect, as far as I could tell.

Actually, they allow bring your own Blu-ray disk for private showings. They'll play just about anything, but you probably want to try and match the screen to your movie's format. For The Rock, we also brought a DCP file on an external drive that was formatted correctly, just in case they...

Local Studio Movie Grill is renting entire theaters for dirt cheap with a "bring your own Bluray" plan, so we and another couple have been watching some classics with a few beers and several rows of social distancing. Aliens: (Theater) 10/10 Personal fave. Just a a solid action flick from...

Warrior Nun (NetFlix): 6/10 Some interesting concepts, but a bit too teen-oriented to be really enjoyable. A bit too much cheese (or not enough - not sure.) Might watch a second season, but only if really bored. Cursed (NetFlix): 7/10 I actually thought this was a pretty well-done...
  11. Solved! Any low profile cards for Dell Optiplex SFF 3010 (Dell suggests AMD Radeon R5 240 1gb but I want something better.)

Are you looking for gaming or something else? 1030 is probably best for gaming. If not gaming, I'm been grabbing used nvidia quadro k620's off ebay (~$35) for some CUDA programming w/ older HP 600 G1 SFFs machines. Nothing amazing, but they come in low-profile, no external power necessary...
  12. Best GUI for interfacing with C/C++ libraries?

It turns out, Dear IMGUI was the perfect solution, fyi. Only got around to using it the last few weeks (was using just SDL after this post), but the combo of SDL2 + IMGUI + OpenGL is silky smooth and super simple to work with. Highly recommend for quick-n-dirty GUI C apps.
  13. Question Sanity Check: AMD Ryzen 5 2400G mini-ITX build

Oh, the Asrock A300W is interesting. I missed that when looking. That cuts-out any discrete GPU in the future, but cuts cost down a bit, too. Have to use SO-DIMMS as well, but that's OK. That's puts it right at $500. And lower if I can ever catch a 1TB NVMe on sale.
  14. Question Sanity Check: AMD Ryzen 5 2400G mini-ITX build

Putting together a smal (mini-ITX) PC for my wife. A 2400G w/ Vega 11 should be plenty for her needs + light gaming (maybe WoW Classic.) Small is important. Trying for ~$500. I was all ready with a cartful of parts (Microcenter + Amazon), when I starting second-guessing the parts. I haven't...

  17. Best GUI for interfacing with C/C++ libraries?

Thanks. That's in my list to look at today.
  18. Best GUI for interfacing with C/C++ libraries?

I'm also wondering if something like SDL2 would be a worthwhile investment? It has OpenGL support and user inputs, which could be nice. But, back to first-order - I don't want to over-complicate this. Basically, I want: Start the app Auto-open a resizable, OS-native window Have a few...
  19. Best GUI for interfacing with C/C++ libraries?

I have a lot of custom cross-platform C and C++ libraries that perform some image generation and manipulation. Currently, I have a small exe that just dumps the resultant images to an image buffer on a dedicated display card and monitor for viewing. The code is fast enough that I can generate...
  20. Remember Life Hacker?

I remember years ago reading this site for nifty ideas and tricks. I just ran across it again. This is their current "Hack": You Can Buy New Stove Drip-Pans! TF?

Man, that got oddly aggressive and off-topic.
  23. Anyone not care about wireless charging

I won't buy another phone without wireless charging. In fact, I just rebought my 3-year-old phone after smashing the old one while hiking, just because I couldn't find any other phone I wanted that also had it. Docks by my nightstand, by my computer, at work, and in the truck. Too convenient...

  25. New wiring in house - Cat6a?

Heh - I'm used to dealing with uncompressed, 10-bit 1080p30 video for work projects (~160MB/s), so I forget the huge savings compression gives, even for 4K. he house is pretty long, but it looks like Cat6 in the attic is plenty for the end runs from the network closet. Still looking for any...
  26. New wiring in house - Cat6a?

Just moved into older house. Needs insulation in attic and some new duct work, but prior to this, I want to run some network cable through the attic while it still relatively open. The wireless in the house is awful - swear there's solid lead in some interior walls. For internet, we have FiOs...
  27. New ~$12-14K commuter car?

Nah - it looks pretty much the same. A few hail dents, grocery cart dings, and paint starting to fade on the roof and hood.
  28. New ~$12-14K commuter car?

Almost 10 years later, just rolled 200K miles on the old Mazda. A/C is flaking-out (short-cycling compressor - adding coolant didn't help.) Check-engine just popped on as well. But other than that, it's held up pretty well. Anyway, still have it for now, but now a new member of the...
  29. Build Advice for a Portable Video Recorder PC

Ideally, I need to get the data back to a central location, while keeping the high-rate capture capability deployed (little to no downtime.) Pulling HDs in pairs, then re-configuring a new raid might be a bit too much work on-site. And the receiver would have to deal with raided drives as...
  30. Build Advice for a Portable Video Recorder PC

If I were going to build a portable PC for multi-TB video recording, what would you recommend, given the following "requirements": ~200MB/s sustained disk write (preferable in a single drive) for the video capture 2-8 TB of (quickly removable) disk space As small as possible (portable...
