It'd be nice if someone could do a study to determine how many people actually have problems that are due to the chipset and not to user error or faulty drivers or whatever. Until then I don't think we'll know for sure how many problems are due to VIA. I think a lot of problems fall under the...

KT266A OWNERS, WINXP BOOT/SHUTDOWN SPEEDS SLOW?

I have a KT266A board and my startup and shutdown both seem to be pretty fast with Windows XP. I doubt it's a problem with the chipset. It's usually caused by some program that Windows has trouble shutting down, so it waits forever while it tries to close it.

Intel is succeding and AMD will have serious problems.

I'm guessing that his point was that if your system is fine, then you don't need to install updated 4-in-1's. VIA doesn't force you to do it, so anyone that says they do doesn't know what they're talking about.

Depending on how much money you have, you could also get a RAID controller and another 30GB drive identical to the one you have and stripe them together for one 60GB drive. Then you could put each of your optical drives on one IDE channel, and you'd get a nice speed boost for your hard...

Western Digital or Maxtor ?

I've had one Maxtor and three WDs in the last few years and I think I'd pick WD. I haven't had any problems with mine. Although I am considering going with IBM for my next purchase.
