u can try erasing the pagefile in root. it can also be affected by multiple drivers being installed for a piece of hardware or permissions like saltin said.

1 beep in the phoenix bios is indicative of ram problems. are u sure the ddr ram is seated properly? on my mobo, even if the two clips supporting the ram snap snugly i still have to put some more downward pressure for the ram to seat properly.
this might not be helpful, but norton systemworks 2002 has a built in scheduler. other than that, a script for running an unattended defrag/chkdsk is also feasible.
did your friend try to flash his bios? to my knowledge bios rom is not susceptible to viruses for the simple fact that it is rom. there are viruses that try to intervene the flash process though. is your friend able to access his os?
you should always have some sort of protection. ie firewall(s). if you go w/ a router, they have a built in firewall. if a software based solution is for you, then sygate is a good product.
