PLEASE!! Help

Driver indeed. On my TNT2/M64, Win2K found a driver for it by default. That driver did 2D well, but couldn't do 3D at all. To check, run dxdiag, click "display", and run the Direct3D test. -PJ

Windows XP Protection Being Cracked ALREADY.....

This crack was made on Windows XP build 2446. The current build is 2458, though I don't know how often they change this registration thing. I can guarantee that this particular crack will not work on final XP. -PJ

what's that INTRANET.EXE for at start up??

If you mean INTERNAT.EXE, it's the keyboard language indicator on the system tray. If you don't want it, disable it though Control Panel -> Keyboard -> something -PJ

Can I use 2 different monitors in a dual monitor setup?

In Win2K, you have to run both monitors at the same res. WinME doesn't have this limitation. -PJ

SONY VAIO Laptop PCG-F350 win2k question

Check what BIOS version you have installed. Then, go carefully over the list of problems solved by later BIOSs. If none of these is relevant for you, go ahead and install Win2000. If any is relevant (say ACPI/Win2000), you'll probably run into problems, especially with model-specific software...

Where is the Favorites Folder in W2K ?

In IE, you can export your favorites to a single bookmark.htm file. Later, you can import them. I think this is a better way of backing up. -PJ

onboard audio causes decreased gaming performance?

The mere on-boardness of the sound chip doesn't matter. I mean, an on-board SB128 is the same as a PCI SB128. However, since on-board sound tends to use cheaper sound controllers, they may cause a slight decrease in performance. -PJ

Why do mainboard sites seem so cheesy?

ESS Maestro - Sound Quality?

You're not missing anything. I think consumer-level "high-end" cards (SBLive!, Philips AcousticEgde) are overrated. Even using high-quality headphones, I can't hear any quality loss from my 0$ on-board C-Media 8738. -PJ

Anyone know what type of sound card is on a SiS 530 motherboard...

Saying "SIS530 mobo" is not giving enough information. SIS530 is the chipset, and many different MBs use it. Either find out what motherboard this is, and look in the mfg's page, or look at the board and search for the sound chip. -PJ

dkozloski: Correct. I wanted to add PS2 to my Pentium166, and was confronted with the same problem. 5 pins => 5!=120 possible wirings. I got it right after 15 attempts. Not fun -PJ

Maybe I'm just wierd, but I look on the MB only once: When I install it. Afterwards, I have better things to look at, say the monitor. Hence, I see no importance in the PBC's color, and don't understand the fuss about its pinkness. If this does it for you, acquire a life. -PJ

Should all PCI sound cards be able to play mulitple wav's?

All sound cards can do it hardware-wise. I mean, they do it during games (gunshot + motor sound, etc.), so why not during regular Windows operation? It's a matter of API and drivers. Basically, sound cards have 2 major APIs through which apps can play sounds: DirectSound - Part of DirectX...

How loud are the maxtors?

My Maxtor DiamondMax40 20GB 7200RPM (52049H4) is very quiet. I usually can't make the sound of it seeking, and I only have 2 fans in my machine. It's much quieter than the Quantum Fireball LM 20GB I have at work. -PJ

Connect the phone cable to a regular phone set, and see whether you get a dial tone. Maybe the computer says "no dial tone" for a reason... -PJ

I am getting "You're currently running MS-DOS mode..." It wouldn't boot into Windows.

Look in config.sys for "DOS=SINGLE" line, and delete it if you find it. Also, check msdos.sys (hidden text file). -PJ

OnBoard Sound Anygood?

I have on-board sound - not AC97, but a real PCI device (C-Media CMI8738). It does basic stereo output very well. I use it with MP3 every day, and it works very well. I've listened to it through a nice set of headphones (KOSS MAC-5), and there's no audible hiss or distortion. As for features...
