Chosing network card priority

What OS are you running? With Windows 2000/XP, right click my network places, select properties, open the Advanced menu up top and then choose Advanced Settings. You'll see a list of all the NIC's in the system, and arrows for bumping them up and down (priority)

No login name at startup screen!

I don't know if this works for the home edition, but it does for professional. Hit Ctrl once then ctrl-alt-delete at the logon screen. You should get a logon box (2k style), and you can logon with the administrator account, assuming you know the password.

Wow, my friend just got his gas and electric bill

This is why it's a good idea to pro-rate the gas bill. It spreads the cost of high winter months across the year. I pay one price every month, regardless of the time of year, and the bill is never a kick in the groin : )

Need to "grab" another users IP address

Just run a whois or nslookup on the ip. If it comes up as a block owned by the ISP your suspect uses, that's close enough to warrant a beating;)

Windows 2000 Server and Windows XP

The 2k machines are likely defaulting to NTLM authentication, which doesnt require DNS functionality. The XP machines are likely defaulting to Kerberos authentication, which does require a properly configured DNS infrastructure.

It's definetly your DNS then. You should install DNS on one of your DC's, and then point all machines in the Domain to that DNS server. Have your DNS server forward to the University DNS server youare using now. Your logon times will improve greatly.
