When you installed your 8045 did you use the plastic washers with the shoulders?
If you did then the CPU fried because the heatsink doesnt hit the core
you also have to be sure the screws are bottomed out as the springs keep the correct pressure on the cpu

Yup Mo Funk's right about the washer thing (As I can sadly attest to) if you use the washers with the "shoulders" the 8045 wont make proper contact with the core, Remember the screws bottom out and the springs apply the pressure. I lost a XP1600 just by using the wrong washers.

No I didn't use a spacer, IMO the only reason to use a spacer is to aviod cracking the core as they make the cpu run hotter. It would've defeated my reason for buying the Alpha 8045 in the first place. I feel the alpha gives you the best chance not to crack your core and keep your cpu cool
