Network Problem

The 169.x.x.x isn't a DHCP'd address. It's an address MS assigns if a DHCP fails. I'm with amdskip, first try replacing the NIC. If you aren't firewalled inside your LAN you could also try connecting the problem PC via crossover cable to a working PC, assign the same static IP it used to have...

Computer won't start, please help!

I've had this before with the exact same file and a simple repair did the trick as it copies most dll and other system files. You might give that a try. It could also indicate a failing hard drive if that part of the disk has become corrupt for some reason. If you have another computer...

Upgrading Hardware for Exchange 2000 Server

If the 3rd IP is something like 169.x.x.x (sorry I can't remember what it is off-hand) then that is one MS assigns sometimes if you have a valid network connection but don't receive an IP when you send out a DHCP request. One thing you COULD try (I'm assuming the other 2 PC's work fine?) is...

Dad got a new PC...wants to "ghost" his current setup to the new pc.

The biggest issue will be whether or not the PC's use the same HAL. If so, an image should be relatively easy to port to the new system (with drivers being the only issue). However if you aren't running the same HAL, you're kinda screwed. There's directions out there for how to change HAL's...

Like Bob said, hopefully you're not actually the admin, and you definately should talk to whoever is to see what's going on. One way to find this info out though sometimes without much trouble is using Sysinternal's PsTools utilities, particularly the psloggedon one...

Well to start with. The IP you did the lookup on is a reserved IP address that basically means "this computer". No matter what computer you're using, if it's got TCP/IP loaded, that IP means "this computer". FYI, it's a good way to test if the basics of your TCP/IP stack are working correctly...

Can't add a printer

Install SP2. Might not fix your problem but it probably won't hurt unless you have something weird installed. Seriously though, I upgraded my wife's Dell desktop to XP Pro a month or so ago and it didn't go so well. It had a crap load of errors (I didn't even bother writing them all down)...

Win2k3 Routing and Remote Access service problems

Anything in the eventlog? You could try reinstalling RRAS. I know it's a weird procedure and you don't actually "un"-install anything. I think you simply disable it and then re-enable it and that's supposed to do it. You might lose your profiles and such though...

Sounds like your boot.ini might've been screwed up. Doing what you did would probably fix it (obviously lol). But just so you know, you might want to check that file next time if you're able.

DVD burning with Nero

Ok man it's simple... The reasons Nero won't burn that DVD is because it's already been written to. It sounds like you're trying to copy a DVD right? Well you can't just pop it in there and tell Nero to make a duplicate, so that's most likely your problem. If you have some spare DVD BLANK...

Good, inexpensive webcams? (sub-50)

Upgraded to XP SP2 and now I can't reply to PM's or Post messages here.

Generally if IE is blocking something in SP2 it will make a sound and then show the information bar. If you aren't seeing this I would be curious if it's not something else. I haven't had any issues with the default SP2 IE settings with Anandtech.

That means that's an ip only visible to those within phonoscope (my cable company)'s service? Correct. Does that mean I have to call to get them to demilitarize or forward ports and whatnot? Yes. Would they even by likely to do that? No. In fact, if your router's IP truly is the 10.x one...

Dell laptop, says it's "Connected" but has no internet connection

I've had similar issues with some D600's at work. It's a piece of $hit! Basically I just keep toggling the wireless on and off. Rebooting seems to help occasionally as well. As far as what causes it, I have no idea.
