    A most curious problem

The computer does not resume from sleep at all - the only way round this is to hard reset. While it's in this state the wired network is not available for all other devices on it - any other PC, my NAS, my TV etc. Disabling IPv6 and WOL has unfortunately made no difference so far.

    A most curious problem

I'm getting a rather interesting problem which has baffled me so far. My PC is connected onto my home network - gigabit wired using the onboard network adapter of my ASUS Z77 Sabertooth. Normal operation is fine, however in certain circumstances when the computer goes into a power save...

Seagate & WD woes because of Thailand flooding.

Here in the UK prices have gone up very fast, on 3TB drives the increase has been about 50% in a week! The number of drives available has noticeably reduced as well.

Do all SSDs have the same performance (practically)?

I've got 2 SSDs myself, the first is an OCZ Vertex 60GB (The original Indilinx one) which I use in my HTPC (Core i3 2100). The other is an Intel X25-M G2 160GB which is in my main desktop (Core i7 860). I've also added an OCZ Vertex 3 120GB to a friends PC (Core i7 920). From my personal...

    Powerline Network - my experience

The main problem with wiring the house is that the walls are mostly solid brick. (Thank living in Britain for that) In addition the floor is concrete and I don't have a basement. While I could run everything through the attic I would have to cut channels in the plaster and brick to hide the...

    Powerline Network - my experience

I haven't changed the password, however I think it would be extremely difficult for any of my neighbours to pick up anything, although I might take one of the plugs round try it out. Was there any improvement using additional plugs? There is potentially one or two more rooms that could benefit...

    Powerline Network - my experience

After a long personnel debate and reading through a huge plethora of conflicting reports about powerline networks I finally took the plunge and bought a Netgear XAVB2001 kit. These adapters support the Homeplug AV upto 200Mbps standard. Installation: The two plugs are sited on different...

Gaming headset that won't get too hot

I've been using a Logitech G35 for a few months now and have found it to be very comfortable (I'm a glasses wearer so not having too much pressure on the side of the headset is important). The sound is pretty good and the mic is excellent - and self mutes when you stow it - handy as I don't...

    Best 30" monitor out there??

I've been using a Dell 3007WFP-HC since it was released a few years ago and have found it to be remarkably good. I'm not a fan of FPS games - favouring more RTS and RPG type games, for these the monitor is excellent. From my experience of using it I have found it is essential wherever possible...

8 Physical cores vs 4 Physical 8 Threads?

As has been said you should not try to compare the clockspeeds of the Xeons you have with an i7. As it is given your particular use the Xeons are going to be a little bit faster compared to a quad core i7. However in the long run they will be a lot more expensive - this is due to the older...

Will Bobcat be the home run AMD is looking for?

I voted NO, not because it's a bad product - far from it in fact but because it obviously forms just one part of the product strategy. The Bobcat is entering a part of the market which could potentially get quite crowded before too long. At the moment it is occupied by various versions of Atom...

Peculiar Sound Problem - problem now solved

The adapter was originally set to auto negotiate and would connect at 1Gbps. This caused the quite pronounced audio and slowdown issues. When the connected speed was manually reduced to 100Mbps all the issues were removed. This also only occurs with the PCI based NIC on the motherboard and not...

Peculiar Sound Problem - problem now solved

Problem sorted....in manner of sorts. Turned out that the onboard PCI network adapter is at fault, driver changes didn't sort it but changing the speed of the adapter down from 1000Mbit to 100Mbit worked a treat. Prior to that it was red bars off the scale, now it green all the way :)

Peculiar Sound Problem - problem now solved

I have recently bought a Logitech G35 headset and have encountered a rather odd problem. During normal windows activity, using iTunes, Spotify, Total Media Theatre it works perfectly and produces clear undistorted sound. As soon as I start gaming, I'm a WoW addict so mostly that the sound...

    Going Green

As a user of a stock 5850 I can confirm that it is both fairly quiet and doesn't suck the juice that much. For games the 470 is a little quicker and for many general purpose stuff is a lot quicker (folding being a key example) however you will spend more on electricity and you will have to...

    1 PC 8 monitors

I don't think the power requirements will be too much of an issue. As it isn't a 3D card the power consumption will be very modest. The M9188 can potentially drive 8 2560x1600 monitors, whereas the TripleHead2Go is very resolution limited.

    Lian-Li PC-888

Possible to drive two separate speakers with two separate audio streams?

You can use 2 soundcards quite successfully here. Wow along with many other games allows you to select the output sound driver within its settings. Applications like web browsers and itunes will output to the default soundcard as determined by windows when the application loads. In vista...

    Moving away from tower...

Yeah, had the mobo for a while, it still works well so there was little point in changing it. I've had a look at the lian li HTPC case and it's quite nice, always had a bit of a soft spot for lian li. However the minor snag is that no-one seems to sell it in the UK, which sucks.

    PS3 On a Dell 3007wfp

The 3007 (either version) does not have video scaling. There are only 2 resoulutions that it properly supports. There are 25660x1600 and 1280x800. Unfortunately neither of these are output resolutions available on the PS3 so the monitor will never work with it.

Nvidia G92 is GeForce 8800 GT

Hopefully for all those mainstream buyers out the this card will give a decent level of performance so that it can earn it's 8800 moniker. With a bit of luck nvidia will have got it right after the disappointing performance of the 8600 series.

Anyone have their computer in their desk cubby hole?

My desk has a cupboard which was fine for housing my computer initially, however that all stopped some years ago when my Athlon 1333 system just kicked out too much heat and became quite unstable. Ever since then my PC has been by itself on the floor and is all the better for it.

    My First Computer Build

You need a heatsink if you buy an OEM cpu. Apart from the graphics card, it's all very last generation. Don't forget to include all the peripherals that you will need. It would be well worth looking at a prebuilt at this price point, you tend to do quite well at the budget end.
