How has the economy affected you?

I have gotten a bump in contract work as full time staff get laid off but projects still need doing. referring out a lot of work to peers and colleagues who are losing employment. making some decent $$ moving people into and consequently out of the cloud as clueless suits desperately flail...

What is the very last "little luxury" you would give up if you were financially strapped?

I've lived without heat/gas before. wasn't THAT awful ( still pretty darned inconvenient ). I've never lived without power and the internet. It'd be counter-productive anyways since my income is tied to my connectivity.

What type of keyboard do you like?

Love my mechanical keyboards. Model M and Dell AT101W for me. Both will probably outlive me. I type a little over 80wpm the last time I checked.

How "efficient" is electron transport as an energy medium?

if my childhood is accurate -- and it is -- the most efficient storage medium for energy is energon cubes. that is all.

why is it so hard for people from the ghetto to get out of the ghetto?

It's more of a matter of perception than anything else. People in low-income neighborhoods look around and they'll see Tom,Dick, and Harry driving around in their new BMWs or gabbing away about their next trip to cancun or something similar, and they feel slighted. They perceive other people...

Why, oh why do school administrators make the decisions they do?

this is easy to take care of. grab the books from last year, grab the current books. show the deficit, and use it to back a tax hike that comes right to the schools. .... watch the reversal come in at relativistic speed.

Who here has graduated recently and are looking for a job?

I started this job I am in almost 3 weeks ago. It wasn't easy to find, but it absolutely doesn't even compare to how hard it was to find work after the dotcom burst and I managed back then as well.

anyone else work at a data center?

You buy them pre-crimped with the jacket that protects that stupid plastic snappy tab. You never use a hand-crimped cable for a production link, especially inter-switch or upstream connections. Reason: network gear capable of pushing a cable is accessibly cheap now. It's almost impossible to...

anyone else work at a data center?

well, there's part of your problem, you should be tossing that cable and getting a new one, not re-crimping the old one. if you have people of varying competencies, you need to make things as boneheadedly idiot-proof as possible.

    "Training" co-workers

It really depends on your corporations org chart. If you and the SVP are not in a subordinate role to your old boss/dept, this is really pretty simple. Grab your SVP and explain that you can train the old staff, but they will likely not be able to function as effectively as you did since there...

Job offers to college graduates that are "scams"..

my litmus test when I was fresh out of college was that if the job didn't prefix itself with "entry-level" or otherwise distinguish itself as such, there was a catch. I bet I could write a decent parser for crappy jobs aimed at college students -- "sales" is a bad time no matter where you...

What Cisco catalyst switch do I need for my ccnp?

if you can afford it, buy 3 3550s and then sell them once you've finished. They're pretty much EOL'd so they're not really going to depreciate a whole lot more.

Am I the only one who thinks the Geico caveman ads aren't funny?

I don't think at this point they're supposed to be funny....just memorable. The fact that you can recall it as the geico caveman is kind of proof of its effectiveness.

    Tracking IP addresses

the most organized server networks I've seen don't really use anything special. Usually an xls or a sqlite database + dns zone files. it seems to me that if you need something to track your IPs for you, then you've failed at keeping your servers organized and need to drop the hammer on ops.

Trying to come up with a list of self rewards for progress in my stock portfolio...

Register a program as a service

    Job related question.

I understand your point and it is valid. I understand many small shops don't have the resources to have extra systems around. The reason they have access to the production clusters, however, is because they have no other database system to develop on. When presented with the option of an...

    Job related question.

when I interviewed, a lot of things were mis-represented. From my job responsibilities, my scope of control, my area of responsibility. What I gathered was this wasn't done maliciously, but rather because they genuinely did not know otherwise. Example, I was told there was a pair of DBAs...

Hey folks, My situation: I started a new job for almost a week now and I'm already entertaining vague notions of leaving. On the plus side, the compensation is more than generous. The nature of the position itself will also look impressive for my career if I do stick around and stay. The...

    Network went slow overnight

I think his point is that most of the folk you find with lots of networking experience have seen those exact symptoms caused by like 50 or 60 different causes. Kinda like going to a world-class MD and saying "My neck hurts, what do you think is wrong with me?". My crystal ball tells me...

Epic poll of pens vs pencils

I guess on average, I like pencils more than pens...because the vast majority of pens blow something fierce. It also really depends on what I'm writing on. having said that, if I had to use only 1 writing instrument for the rest of my life, it'd be one of my pens instead of pencils.

I am seriously thinking about quitting school and rebuilding my life

find your advisor, catch them during office hours and tell them you feel the program is an ill use of your time. That's what they are there for. Even if you don't feel your advisor is competent or even cares very much, you might be surprised and at the very least -- they can understand the...

Going off the Grid, under the radar, need some ideas

d00d, I think you want to go back to keys...and then do rsync -var --rsh="ssh -i <private_key>" <src> username@remotehost:<dst> that would be non-trivially more secure than what you have going on...and it fits on 1 line.

    Colassal blunder.

I hate that question. as an interviewer, I never ask it because it's stupid. It serves no purpose, gathers no useful information because it's so cliche. my standard answer to it is "kryptonite" and the response tells me if they genuinely wanted a significant answer to it. also, I am in...

How many network interface card can you have on one computer?

Now you're just talking the crazy talk. 10 nics, 4 teams -- that's only 2 nics on 4 networks each with 1 for OOB and 1 for sync to some other node or maybe even just using 2 nics for attaching to iscsi. Happens commonly for shops that want VM failover and virtual machines, but don't want to...
