Windows Shared drivers and router firewall

Microsoft XP and 2000 come with the required settings. DMZ or your firewall may allow incoming VPN connections it uses port 445 I believe. Check on the net.

Looking for most reliable cable/dsl router.

DLink 704P - I have been running Zone Alarms behind it and nothing and I mean nothing can get through - right out of the box - no configurations it is pretty easy to administer and set up. I have had friends try to hack in and they can not grc.com's sheilds up can't even detect anything.

No, it is better to set it to 5190 because that is their default port for those things. Keep in mind both firewalls need to be set up to let that connection through!

web sharing on 2 comps + ping

Take the router, and get a firewall installed on it. Hub everything your computer gets, hers will too - and vice versa, therefore the router will prove better pings and what not.

Under advanced settings make sure you have enable NetBios over TCP/IP, and make sure you have the same sub net mask. Second change the work groups on both computers to something like "OurHome" or "Home" or "Cookies"

Only 2 downloads at a time with ie5?

HTTP 1.1 says that you only connect one connection to each server, without out 1.1 checked in IE, and the speed tweak put down there you are sending up to 20 requests to one server, putting strain on the server - the reality is though it does nothing 'bad' just slows down other people.

See if you can get another conction, i.e. a hub, or another router and see if it is bad. I don't know what else to say, I have never had this much trouble.

Default gateway is for your internet connection, that should be your router/modem what ever you are using to connect to the interent. Do you have XP's firewall started on either of the computers? What are you using to connect them? Can either of them get on the internet? Are you just trying to...

Actually I disagree. If you want a real strong firewall and servers USB modems can do the function. You can ICS and really have control over who has access to your internet. It is bad if you want to share it, but other than that I think it has it advantages because the computer with it plugged...

What is your ISP? If MSN their settings are installed on the modem and you must get a different one from them, or else some butt munch can use your account if your settings are put in the modem. Other ISPs only allow their hardware to connect... that way they can monitor and bill you more...
