Who's interested in the new Mustang SUV?

I like it just wish Ford hadn't cheaped out on the hardware for the main display resulting in the current laggy mess. My other vehicles have normal HVAC knobs/buttons and it's so nice.

Just for everyone's reference, when you go in a grocery store in Berkeley there's still around 25% of the customers still masking. It's a special group of people in that city.

Need sealant on gas cooktop tube fittings?

You're saying it's acceptable to need to replace an entire $1500 cooktop because one tiny little orifice broke off?

    Insurance rates skyrocketing in California

It's not just the USFS. There's a lot of extremely overgrown private property in the foothills as well, and this is long after the 2018-2020 fires so it's not a novel idea anymore. The people that live there just don't give a shit, then cry when their house burns down.

Need sealant on gas cooktop tube fittings?

Everyone at Bosch involved in the design of this cooktop should be executed. I've never worked on something so unnecessarily difficult. There's a shit ton of room in the box under the top but it's designed like it's the engine bay of a race car, and not in a way that has any apparent cost...

Need sealant on gas cooktop tube fittings?

Yeah at first I didn't understand it was a compression fitting. I'm used to a much more precisely machined mating surface. 🤣 That made me question if this was some weird fitting that did need sealant on the mating surface. I think I'm going to get around to doing this job tomorrow so...

Need sealant on gas cooktop tube fittings?

Oooh finally found a video showing disassembly of a similar cooktop. Confirms the top shouldn't be weight-bearing (I can't easily get below it as there's a built-in oven), and no sealant used on the aluminum tubes. Ah and this one which is nearly the same model and confirms the...

Need sealant on gas cooktop tube fittings?

Not sure yet. I think tomorrow I may try taking it all apart. I'm leaning towards no goop as well. Bosch customer service is absolutely useless, which I will keep in mind when buying future appliances. Took them a week to reply to my message asking for the orifice part number as it isn't on...

Need sealant on gas cooktop tube fittings?

I need to replace the set of tubes to the center burner in my gas cooktop after breaking off the orifice trying to clean it to stop the burner from sooting, then breaking the orifice holder trying to remove the broken orifice. Do I need to use any sealant either on the mating surface or the...

'1994 was the last good year' - WIRED

Man I remember going to the local community college which had a 1.5 Mbps T1 line to use their computer lab to download shit and copy it to 3.5" floppy disks, which was still much faster than trying to download on a 28.8 Kbps modem.

    Drilling through old garage slab

The cracks all over the slab support the no rebar theory. :D Years ago I got a great deal on a Hitachi DH38MS SDS Max rotohammer for $199. Used it to clean up all the crack edges for patching, and also drilled four 3/4" x 9" holes for anchoring the shear walls I installed on the sides of the...

    Drilling through old garage slab

I'd like to drill a line of holes along the interior edges of my attached garage slab to do a preventive termite treatment. The slab was poured in 1965, so do I need to be careful about drilling through any sort of vapor barrier? Not sure if they did that sort of thing back then. The...

56-yr. old 3/8" Redwood Siding Separating Non-Detracting Slat Additions

Yeah Lexel is fine if you don't need to touch it and don't care about the final surface, but it doesn't tool well. I used it around the windoors on my truck camper shell that leaked from nearly day one, and it's held up well so far for five years.

Got the first two Moderna, then Pfizer booster in April 2022. Finally got Covid a month ago for the first time. It just seemed like a strong cold...mild fever, stuffy, sore. Lasted about three days before I was feeling nearly normal. I then got a nuts sinus infection two weeks later that...

Smart Thermostat for Ancient Wall Furnace

Check how many wires are actually in the wall. If you're lucky they ran 4-wire instead of 2-wire. You might be able to use a transformer to provide the C wire at the furnace end and use a normal thermostat, which will look nicer than having to run a power cord from the thermostat.

Makes sense. I was thinking about my original question more, and I think it's mostly how do people get such an accurate reading when using a tape measure like this pic? It's probably what you said about getting in the grove, but it just seems hard to measure in that corner to 1/16". And...

    Ice maker outlet box

I hadn't thought of sweating the nipple onto the valve outside the box. SO MANY OPTIONS. I don't have any kind of a vise here so I'll have to ponder if that's realistic to do. My channel locks aren't that long though maybe long enough if I have a helper hold them. I am trying to keep the...

    Ice maker outlet box

Good find - decent chance that's it. Likely what Greenman was envisioning as well. Hopefully can just repack it and be done. If that doesn't work and it is sweat I guess I should be prepared to add a nipple to get the new valve back up into the box since I'm going to have to cut a fair length...

    Ice maker outlet box

I actually just picked up the BrassCraft multi turn valve stem repair kit to keep around, so I'll grab another for this specific valve. Or is there a better brand I should use? It sounds like I'm just going to need to stock a variety of quarter turn fittings in case the new valve packing...

    Ice maker outlet box

A couple years ago when I took the attached pic I stupidly tried closing the valve as we don't use the ice maker, and found that the stem leaks when the valve is closed. After a bit of panic I luckily found it stopped leaking when reopened. This is at a remote condo that's an hour from a...

Knack for cutting interference-fit framing lumber?

Good point, hadn't considered multiple shots. :D Sounds like it's a combination of there's enough margin for error and with enough experience it's easy to fit in that margin. So you aim for your target from the beginning, and not add say 1/8" by default because you know you're going to take...

Knack for cutting interference-fit framing lumber?

I've always wondered about this. On home improvement TV shows, usually when opening up a wall to add a header for an opening, they install studs or the beam itself that are perfectly sized to fit with a couple sledge whacks. How do you know exactly what length to cut it to and then make it...
