College networking pains

its a print server because we have 3 PC's hooked up to it, and it was cheap anyways. Plus i may want a print server later...like in an apartment.

update: i have purchased a D-LINK DI-704P. This is a Broadband router with built in print server. How should this work? Will i need to turn on/off anyhting on the router? And are most resnets static or dynamic IPs, because it will need to know that. Just any advice on setting this up once...

Fan noise on IS7

yeah, the noise does kinda bother me, but i'm not sure if it bothers me enough to RMA... any tips on how i can tell which fan it is? i can't really tell since the GPU, NB and CPU fans are all within 2 inches of eachother.

Fan noise on IS7

I've got an IS7 with a p4 2.8c. Lately i've noticed a low whining and i don't think its my case fans. Has anyone heard of the Northbridge fan running at too high/low RPM's? Could this be a sign of a system problem with the mobo (i.e. Norhtbridge running too hot)?

i think what everyone is telling us amdskip is that the campus people are lying to us ;) So i guess i should just take a router, plug my box, my laptop and my roomie's box up, set up maybe some DHCP on the router, and plug a printer in one of the boxes? Thanks for all the help so far. Any...

Ok, so after headin to orientation i've been informed i'm only assigned one IP address and therefore will not be able to put a hub in my room to network my school-work laptop and my personal enjoyment desktop....wtf... Anyone know a workaround to this? Is there any way i can network both...

How high can you push the Corsair XMS3200LL ?

bump for more opinions on this... i have a stick of 512 hyperx otw to replace my 2 sticks of Geil that i *think* were holding my OC back. Dual channel THAT important? Dividers = bad? If anyone knows how high to expect to get on an IS7 witha 2.8c on a 1:1 divider, i'd appreciate that info too..

Hi, i was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a nice laptop bag/backpack. I have a thinkpad t23 and need a backpack type bag to protect it as i bike around campus etc. Any ideas? Links? deals? experiance? Thanks.

rugged laptop under $1500?

well, my father, my brother and i all use thinkpads and none of us have any problems with them. My brother has a real old model (hand me down from dad), i have a t23 and he has like a t20. Some other AT'r mentioned he heard lots of reports of bad mobos, but i have no experiance with that...

Buy a T30. IBM pwns. don't worry about anything breaking on you....IBMs are probably the most durable laptops besides maybe those Panasonic toughbooks ;) Where are you hearing all these reports of mobos crapping out?

LED Fans.... can the lights be turned off?

just a note from my experiance with my 5 blue LEDs in my Chieftec case. I installed the Sunbeam rheobus and when i turn it to 7v ( the LED on the rheobus switches to red) the fans' LEDs don't have enough power to be bright anymore. The fans still provide some airflow, but the lights aren't (or...

OC'rs challenge

i'm not talking about Golden Dragon stuff. I'm just not sure about RAM and performance...is more better? less but faster is better? If i end up spending this 50 or so bucks to switch, am i going to be hurting my system's longevity or upping it?

Confusing memory O/C problem

i dunno about your first question. I'm on an IS7 with 1 GB of Geil value 3200 memory anda 2.8c. So far i've only gone up to 220 FSB in 1/1 divider. That = RAM running at 440mhz and CPU at 3.08 ghz. I think with a 600 mhz overclock you are probably reaching your CPU limit, but its probable...

OC'rs challenge

Ok, which set up will be better: Scenario 1- What i have- CPU running around 3.08 GHZ 1 GB of Geil DDR3200 (400mhz stock) running at @ 440 mhz and loose timings ( 2.5-3-3-8 i think) in Dual Channel Scenario 2- Will cost me around 40 bucks CPU OC'd fully from its 2.8c stock setting to...

Sub-$1300 laptop recommendations

I agree with Rufio....IBM all the way. I got a nice T23 for only 1000 bucks. Does everything you'd want to. Although graphics are probably a bit lacking for WC3. Dunno. Haven't installed it yet.

Basic RAM questions

I said this in another post, but not getting much action there. Anyways....would low quality RAM cause difficulties in OC'ing? Would the best solution be to send it back and get about half as much RAM, but much higher quality and be able to run tighter timings and faster CPU? Any help on...

OC'ing Difficulties on p4

I was thinking...maybe i should return this Geil RAM to newegg, suffer the 15% restock fee, and buy 1 stick of the really nice OCZ or Corsair stuff....what do y'all think? Would the RAM swap possibly help me overclock? Is 512 mb of tight timing ram and OC processer better than 1 gb of loose...

Are you saying you suspect its a bad CPU in your system, my system or in both of our cases? I didn't know there was such a thing as a bad CPU...i thought its usually RAM, motherboard, or conflicts between the 2.

Ok, i've got the ABIT IS7 with a 2.8c, Zalmann 7000CU cooler, a sapphire radeon 9700 pro and 1 gb of Geil 3200DDR Value ram. I can't seem to overclock at all. I've tried changing CPu voltage as high as 1.6, ram voltage as high as 2.8, and run FSBs at 215, 220, 250, and various speed in between...

most of the reviews i read says it runs fine at 400 mhz with the 2.5 6 3 3 settings, and that's all i could really ask for for 71 bucks a stick, but is it going to hamper my OC'ing of the P4?

I ordered my IS7, P4 2.8c and 2 sticks of the 512mb Geil PC-3200 Value RAM. It is rated at 400 Mhz. Anyways, i wanted to know once i get this all and put it together, in order to OC the p4 i'll have to up the FSB, and if i up the FSB, that pushes the RAM, doesn't it? Do you think the Geil...

IS7/2.6c vs. AMD

my last build was a t-bird 1.4 ghz AMD. Its good, it runs, it does stuff fast enough (or did when it was the high end of the market) but is sorta hot and therefore noisy to cool. Basically, i've been out of the loop on technology for 2 years and i dont' understand how so many people support...
