Alpha 8045 and side blow/suck holes

Use a higher flow fan and have it sucking air out of the PAL8045. Alpha's tech specs show less thermal resistance when the fan is sucking air out of the heatsink rather than blowing into it. Less thermal resistance is better ;) As for your problem with intakes, I'm sure you can find creative...

Is it safe to use a gas powered air pump to clean a case?

I'm not sure if the exhaust residue is combined with the air supply... but most likely that pump has oil inside to lubricate its moving parts... most air compressors have this key problem. The problem is that when you use these pumps to clean your case, they blow a minute amount of condensation...

ATI R300 Thermal Shim Problems?

That's why you lap very carefully with a high-grade sand paper. It's been done. The VPU is just like recent AMD and older P3 CPUs. They have a thin epoxy coating over them that somewhat protects them. You Anandtech guys are not ard enough :)

Is the heatsink goo necessary for cpu fans?

Use whatever thermal compound you have available. Even the cheapest will do, as it is just a P3 800mHz.

Check out this case mod

Looks fugly. Not ugly, but fugly. There's an arcade I occasionally go to in Northridge, CA. called "Family Fun Arcade". The owner decorated the walls inside with old arcade system boards :) Nice place to get jumpers :P

ATI R300 Thermal Shim Problems?

The R300 is designed to be used with a heatsink that utilizes a thermal pad, which bridges the gap. I for one do not like the idea, but supposedly the shim is there to protect the surface mount components adjacent to the R300 core. I would just lap the shim and use some thin mica sheets to...

Is Nanotherm Thermal Grease any good?

XTC seems on par with AS3. Watch for Nanotherm's newest product: EXP; I hear it will blow Arctic Silver out of the water :)

are there guides on how to replace the powersupply fan?

Do you really think that letting a PSU sit for 30 mins unplugged will release it's charge? Those caps can store power for quite some time... I'd be safer for you to leave your PSU plugged into your mobo, but unplug it from the wall. Press the power on button a few times and the fans will spin...

Y.S. Tech TMD for my PAL8045 Panaflo L1's for my case I used to use a Papst 80mm for my PAL8045, but when the TMD's first appeared, I just had to get one :) I use Sunon 80mm fans in the Antec cases at work.

Anybody ever try using accoustic dampening material?

Sound dampening materials only cause heat to build up when your case airflow is shoddy. In all of my cases, I've designed the airflow layout to be good regardless of what may be on the sides of the cases. Heat can only build up if it gets the chance to build up ;) I recommend a tar-based...

Well, that's all part of the attraction (lure) of the Alienware systems. Chieftec is making a lot of new variants of its original case, so you may want to take a look at those. I know www.directron.com has quite a few ;)

Where should i put my Coolermaster copper ram heatsinks??

I'd use them for my mosfets and clock gen. Putting small heatsinks on a south bridge or north bridge would be a waste and would not be as good as a single, large heatsink. I would only do this if I had the kit sitting around for free... I would not buy them just for that.

Looks like you need a mobo to go with all those spare parts. I'd look at Shuttle's offerings. They are the smallest i've seen, and are quite portable.

Where to get QUALITY round cables?

I've used the coolermaster ones before, and they seem to be pretty high quality. You may be able to find some high quality flat IDE cables, but I'm not sure where. Flat cables would give you the ultimate reliability and least possibility for crosstalk.

The Holy Grail - Plan for a silent (or at least very, very quiet) PC

Heh, your suggestions will indeed allow for a computer to run silent, but not as cool as it can be. I personally will fret when my CPU goes over 50*C... (dependent on CPU usage and ambient temp). I doubt your suggestions will give hardcore enthusiasts the peace of mind that they work so hard...
