I'm confused as to what you mean by "opening" and "closing" of a circuit. An open circuit doesn't work, because it doesn't conduct electricity. A closed circuit is just a circuit... The simplest computers did this: you could apply a voltage here, and a voltage there, and you'd get a voltage...
