I received free MAXELL DVD-R discs from a friend.

You've never heard of Maxell? I'd say they're one of the more common brands of disc's available ... especially through retail stores. Maxell, Memorex, Verbatim, etc... all come to mind as commonly available

Decent PDA w/ wifi needed

Look at the new Palm T|X just came out recently, its quite nice, has real Wi-Fi and bluetooth, full color, documents to go, picture/media viewer, and only $299 of course there's also the lifedrive, for around $500 main advantage being it's 4GB hard drive.

Has anyone used a Samsung ML-2010 laser printer?

A friend of mine bought one because after rebates and discounts he was able to get it cheaper than buying a new toner for his older samsung. so far no complaints, seems to work fine.

the brother does use separate carts... retail for about $12.50 per color/ $22 black. however, i find the brother ink jet printers to be frustrating. they take forever to turn on and initialize. they give obscure error messages all of the time. the phrase "i need to make a quick copy" means...

Could I use this?

The 26 pin external connector port allows you to connect an optional Dazzle interface breakout box (not included) for connecting various analog input and output devices, but it is not necessary when using the Firewire port as described above. :D

Opinions on multifunction printers in the $100-$150 range

good choice, about the only thing comparable, would be the hp 6210, and a lot of people don't like the hp ink system. IMO, as long as you didn't go with brother, you made the right decision.

Are there any notebooks worth getting besides a Dell???

the HP's usually have a windows install disk, and then a dvd full of drivers and apps. meaning you should be getting a clean install of ONLY the OS if you use the first disk... maybe this really isnt' the case? or maybe it's xp home running a bunch of stupid wizards in the background because...
